Good question. It's a loaded one too. I think the government may be using the auto industry recalls as a distraction from the real problem in this country.
That's a bit of a conspiracy theory and leap, given that the majority of auto companies are not operated out of the US, or have any government stake in them.
I guess I have to disagree with you there. I think the answer is a lot simpler: the trend in the last decade, especially, is for companies (not just the auto industry, but spanning several industries) is to outsource wherever they can to run leaner and reduce costs. The outsourcing of parts construction to other firms removes the automaker, to an extent, out of the manufacturing process of that part; they design it, someone else makes it, and the automaker then installs it on the assembly line.
I think we are seeing more recalls because the outsourced parts are not seeing the same degree of pre-installation testing, and post-manufacture QA as the parts built by the company itself. Result: more part failures leading to more recalls to correct the defects. No government involvement in this one, nor even a conspiracy among the automakers; they are merely following a common place 21st century practice aimed at remaining lean and competitive since other auto companies are doing the same thing as well.
