GM Recall

Why do you think so many recalls in the last couple of years? Do we just hear about them more or maybe I'm just more up on car issues in general and it is the same? What's up bus?

I think it's a little of both.
As the demand goes up and quality goes down...this happens.
Also, we have this great site to read and learn.
Hello, Chubbs1!
My bus is doing fine

Since cars are designed to bring in the highest profit per vehicle stuff happens. Some times stuff happens no matter what you do! At least they are fixing a problem area which is good.

There is really not much quality in cars these days. The only saving grace we get as consumers is a forced quality due to the emission warranty.

That is the previous generation of CTS. WHY do they put a picture of a brand new CTS? The press is either dumb or wants to hurt GM by making people think it's the new car. I think both.

Why can they not recall a car I own ('03 Impala)?

My wife said once she smelled "something burning." I told her that if there ever is to let "him" burn. So many bugs in this car I'm giving up on GM.

Most likely the person who had to come up with an image for the story did a search on Google images, and found a picture of a CTS that looked fine, and didn't require any cropping or resizing....

Look closely, the front plate says "Capitol Cadillac". The image was swiped from a dealer's website.

I doubt the quantity of recalls have increased, just the attention and media coverage. Especially here on this forum!

I think so too, but they definately ARE dumb.

The ABC network news has used a clip of a 1995-ish Lumina to illustrate GM stories for years.

Good question. It's a loaded one too. I think the government may be using the auto industry recalls as a distraction from the real problem in this country.

That's a bit of a conspiracy theory and leap, given that the majority of auto companies are not operated out of the US, or have any government stake in them.

I guess I have to disagree with you there. I think the answer is a lot simpler: the trend in the last decade, especially, is for companies (not just the auto industry, but spanning several industries) is to outsource wherever they can to run leaner and reduce costs. The outsourcing of parts construction to other firms removes the automaker, to an extent, out of the manufacturing process of that part; they design it, someone else makes it, and the automaker then installs it on the assembly line.

I think we are seeing more recalls because the outsourced parts are not seeing the same degree of pre-installation testing, and post-manufacture QA as the parts built by the company itself. Result: more part failures leading to more recalls to correct the defects. No government involvement in this one, nor even a conspiracy among the automakers; they are merely following a common place 21st century practice aimed at remaining lean and competitive since other auto companies are doing the same thing as well.
