GM PS Fluid - Clear???

I just changed out the PS fluid in my truck this week which is the first time I have done this. In the past I have only just keep it top off if needed. When I pumped out the old fluid it was a burnt red color which is what I expected it to be like. When I went to fill it up with the new GM PS fluid, to my suprise, it was CLEAR.

This is the first time I have used this fluid because I got from and online dealer for a reasonable price. The bottle was still sealed when I got it.

In the past the only color I have seen for PS fluid has been red in color like the old stuff I pumped out of the system.

Anybody have any experience with seeing clear PS fluid or know why it is clear in color now???

The power steering fluid I use at work is made by Esso, and is clear.

Most power steering specific fluids are clear.

A lot os PS systems call for ATF, which is red. But OTOH, most PS specific fluids I've seen are clear. I guess in most systems you can run either.

Most dealers service departments, along with the manufacturer(assembly line), are too incompetent to trace leaks. So, they prevent 2 fluids from having the same color in order to tell them apart.

Thats why I prefer a car with ATF in the PS reservoir. Either the manufacturer has more faith in their service departments, or they engineer the vehicle not to leak power steering fluid and ATF.......

The GM PS fluid in both of my last 2 Suburbans was clear. FWIW, I had better results with Royal Purple MaxEZ syn PS fluid. Cured the infamous GM PS pump growl.

I was told (not sure if this is totally true), actual PS fluid is based upon mineral oils so they leave it clear. And the evergreen oil recycler wouldn't take a tank of used oil because he asked one of my employees if there was anything foreign in the tank that he should know about before he tested it, and my guy said there was ps and ATF that he knew of.
So my tank wasn't taken, but the next week I kept my mouth shut and the guy sucked it all out and the fluid test passed just fine.


I've been having great results with the Redline PS fluid, quieted up the Ford ps pump whine, although I really enjoy hearing the sound..
