In my Vette I wait until my oil life monitor counts down to zero before doing an oil change and my used oil analysis have always shown the TBN to still be strong. One time I went 2000 miles further on the oil after the monitor hit zero and the oil was still good (that OCI was 9000 miles, running GC 0w30).
FWIW, for the 2001 model year GM revised the oil life monitor on the Corvettes because they found the 97-00 system was being too conservative and the oil had way more life left in it. The system in my Corvette is based on an oil life with a maximum of 10,000 miles while the 2001 and newer system is based on an oil life with a max of 15k. So in essence I could reset my OLM and go another 50%. The only reason I don't do this is because I've got a Vararam cold air intake which lets in more dirt than the stock unit, so I'm not comfortable pushing my oil beyond 7 or 8000 miles anymore as the silicon levels would get too high. (on that run that I went 9k I didn't have the Vararam intake on the car yet)
