Ah, you might want to look again because Kendall GT1 Full Synthetic is GM4718M certified and is on the list in the link.

Nope, he's right. Kendall GT-1 Ultimate Synthetic is on the list. Kendall GT-1 Full Synthetic is NOT on the 4718M list.

Two different products.

JackB1. Why would you even consider using cheap Walmart
oil in your CTS? I would never think of putting cheap oil
in my cars except in a junker. You live in a country that
probably has the cheapest oil prices on the planet. Go with
Mobil 1 or any other synthetic that meets the 4718 spec.

I stand corrected. Had never even heard of the Ultimate version. My mind just saw what it wanted to see I guess. Thought the list said the full synthetic.

Do not run a cheap oil with DI. As the BMW, Audi and Mazda guys are finding out, valve deposits are a HUGE concern with DI engines. Since crankcase vapors are still routed to the intake via the PCV system, all the oil vapor turns to carbon on the intake valves. Good quality synthetics seem to help the problem and reduce deposits. Fuel dilution is different monster lurking. As the fuel dilutes the oil it becomes more volatile, there were some used oil analysis showing flash points down to 300F! These 3.6 DI engines are very hard on oil, just browse through the used oil analysis section. Even with a good synthetic, 4000 miles seems to be the max before fuel dilution becomes a problem.

If you want the engine to last, frequent oil changes and intake cleanings are going to be the norm.

I find the responses that allude to running a "cheap" oil interesting. They imply that Supertech synthetic is a "cheap" oil.[differn't than less expensive] I have not seen anything to substantiate that claim yet. This is one of the reasons I use a fine site like this. To seperate fact from fiction.

To the OP.

If you find the clear bottle supertech syn I would run it with no hesitation. Since you are Frugal I would take advantage off any sales and rebates such as what PP had going or any oither oils that are on sale...the best oil is the least expensive one that meets the needs.

Well it depends on what you count as fine results? I say you put some SuperTech synthetic in the car drive it until the Oil Life Moniter System alerts you it's time to change. Then take a sample and send out to lab so we can see how fine is fine or maybe not so fine? I would run SuperTech inthe wifes Buick but not in my Camry. I drive hard she drives easy. My engine is also harder on oil they here engine is.

I suspect that you will find that SuperTech is not going to do a good job especially in your Direct Injection engine. If you do a TBN I am betting by the time the oil life monitor comes on your oil will be more then spent it will be DOA. I also suspect that the wear metals will be sky high.I do not want to get into it all in this thread as I just got back from Chemistry Lab and at 36 years old chemistry sucks!First buy some run it and test it and get TBN because this is going to be a huge factor since you want to run the oil at least until the change oil light comes on. The computer has no idea that SuperTech has terrible TBN retention!

It is cheap so if it works well enough then it is money saved. We have seen numerous case's in the past where their products had less then good quality control where additives levels especially in gear lube where only 1/2 what they should have been etc......

If the oil either fails to last the duration of the oil life monitor system or if it fails to protect the engine from excessive wear then we have false ecconomy. We know that M1 can last for 1 year or 15,000 miles no problem. We know M1 meets GM oil standards. We also know that since you will only be changing your oil about twice a year or less with OLM system that you total cost for oil changes is relativly static and fixed. The moeny you might save by usings sub standard oil as compared to what is recomended is only money saved if you get to pass on any latter engine problems to the next sucker that buys the car used!

Yeah, I gotta get me some of that Sinopec Great Wall Polar Star.

Yeah, I especially like how it rolls in both the concepts "Sino" and "opec" in the same word. Sinister -- very sinister. . .

I find it interesting that Mobil 1 Extended Performance is NOT on the high performance list, whereas the "normal" flavors of M1 are.

PP is in my 2005 'Vette.

Meets the GM 4718M spec.

$20 for 5 qt. jug at Walmart.

I would choose the PP even if it were higher than the M1.

I don't want to start anything with you, and this is NOT an M1 bash, but we know nothing of the kind. That 1 year/15K is a suggested or possible interval it is not a "known" fact. Just as Amsoil's 1 year/25K( SSO )is a suggested or possible interval length and not a known fact. Royal Purple says their oil is good for 12K but doesn't mean it is every time. Mfg suggested interval lengths are just possibilities. Nothing "known" about them.

No 2 engines are the same and there is absolutely NO WAY to know an oil can go that length of time for sure without testing it at some point to verify the info regadless of the mfg's claims. Yes M1( I assume you mean EP )can possibly go a full year and 15K( this is really the issue )but it is not a known fact it will in every application as you imply above.

Mobil 1 0w30 meets the appropriate GM spec.
For the frugal, you can buy 5qt jugs at Wally for $22.00, and then get $10.00 MIR 2X, available through the end of October.
I would probably run this oil out to the extent of the OLM, although you could certainly afford to change it early for the price.

That's exactly what I do on my 08' caddy SRX. It's also so easy to change the oil on it, because the filter is located on top, and there's plenty of clearance underneath eliminating the need for ramps or stands to drain it out.

In the owners manual it says to be sure to use a synthetic that has the GM approved symbol listed. I was just at Walmart and did purchase Mobil 1 which says on the label that it meets GM required specifications. Since I have formally used Walmarts SuperTech synthetic oil I looked at the label to see if it mentioned these GM specs. I could not find anything. Just what are these GM specs and why would not SuperTech meet them as well as Mobil 1?

Jack,

My brother has an 08' Caddy CTS and the dealership uses Castrol "Syntec" instead of the standard Mobil 1. Why I can't figure out. Anyway as long as it meets the GM specs one can use any synthetic of their choosing.

Durango

Your brother needs to point out to the dealer that, while two of Castrol's products have 4718 approval, the Syntec version does not.
