I may be getting hold of a 1988 Suburban, 6.2 diesel, just for a driver, not pulling anything. I know the 6.2 issue, so I thought I would mention that. *;o)

This rig is an original owner, with 116,000 miles on it. Oil has been changed every 3000. The rig is spotless and very well maintained.

Any recommendations if I do get this, regarding engine oil/maintenance?

Any 15w40 should work fine in the summer, but I would definately use a 5w30 or 5w-40 HDEO in the winter. I've owned a few of the GM 6.2's and they are good engines, but don't start well with thick oil. Make sure you check all the glow plugs before winter. Just put an ohm-meter on the glow plug, if the resistance is infinite the plug is bad. Also don't EVER let the coolant level get low, if you do the heads will crack.

Good to know. I have a lot of diesel experience, just not much 6.2 though. Sounds like a typical V8 diesel.

If memory serves me correctly, they were around 130 HP at something like 235 ft lbs of torque. Less than half the power of the new 6.6 L Duramax.

I had one for a few years. We drove it from Ohio to Williamsburg, VA one summer. Got down to 2nd gear at 30 MPH on the WVA turnpike hills.

LOL....less than 1/8 of the price of a Duramax as well!

Having a Suburban that gets 24mpg is do-able, no matter how fast you go.

My last 6.2 had 390,000 miles before it started knocking (really, really loud) and quit running.

I've had 2 and wish I was on my third. They plowed well and ran forever, turning great mileage numbers. Not exactly a speed demon though.

Good luck and enjoy the great fuel economy. My last 6.2 went well over 300K before the frame and body rusted beyond repair.

Amsoil 15w40. Either synthetic-blend of full synthetic.

And if you want to use a thinner oil in winter, Amsoil Series 3000 5w30.
