Have been looking for GL-4 Manual Transmission Fluid for the old Beemer. Don't like using the GL4/5 combo fluids. Have found Redline MT-90 and a RP product on Amazon, both Synthetic. Does anyone know if dedicated GL-4 fluid is still made in non synthetic? All help appreciated. Only need 2-5 qts.

I think the OP is specifically looking for a conventional.

Pennzoil purportedly makes a GL-4 conventional, but as far as I remember, it can only be purchased from a distributor, and it's only sold in 5-gallon pails.

Oops,my bad :^P Didn`t see that. Hmm,that leaves very few options. Like you said,Pennzoil makes Gear Plus 80W90 in dino, and then the Sta Lube 85W90 from Napa which is really a great bargain.

I saw conventional GL-4 at Farm and Fleet a few years ago.
Mystic was the brand I think, don't know if they still make it.

Thanks for all the replys,

I saw the Pennzoil on Amazon but only in cases of 12 qt for almost $200.

Sounds like a stop at NAPA is in my future. BMW brand (Spectro) gear oil is now GL-5 also, and the counter guy seemed clueless or didn't care, as to whether it was OK for the old Beemers. I will look for the Mystic brand, but no Fleet and Farm's around here.

Do you have links and or part numbers? It would be helpful. I have never seen NAPA or Valvoline GL-4 only rated gear oil for over a decade now.

Why would you not want to use synthetic? Cost? Seals?
Castrol VXM80 is the cheap GL4 we use downunder but I can't see it on the US site.

I you pick up something that meets MIL-L-2105E, MT-1, or SAE J2360 that should ensure your yellow metal compatibility. Those specs build on the GL-5 spec and include a copper strip corrosion test. Should be fine for brass synchros

Thanks again for all the replys,

I went ahead and ordered Redline MT-90 from Amazon. By the time I drove 35 miles R/T to my nearest NAPA, the gas used will pay for the Synthetic that comes to my door in two days. Sometimes I forget I have Amazon Prime. Really only need one quart at a time. I guess I will give the old girl a treat.
