GL-3 IS INACTIVE API RATING, GL-4 AND GL-5 NOT SAFE FOR BRASS/BRONZE. NEED ZERO TO VERY LITTLE EP ADDITIVES. THOUGHTS ON SUBSTITUTES/SAFE ALTERNATIVES FOR VINTAGE MANUAL TRANS/OVERDRIVES SPECIFYING GL-3?

I SUSPECT I AM BETTER OFF WITH GL-4 that states it is "safe" for yellow metals. I am wondering if it is the type of sulfate/phosphates used that attack the brass/bronze?

How good a shape is the transmission in? Any leaks or weeps? Syncro's decent?

If you want one fill and a super slick shifting transmission, check into Redline MTL. I think it's yellow metal safe... It's my go-to oil for transmissions since my last BMW a couple of cars ago. Really good stuff if it'll work for you

Thanks...1951 Ford 37,000 original miles, so in good working order want to maintain however. Properly. Seems a lot of GL-4 is yellow metal safe...good news. Cheers.

Conventional 80w-90 that meets MT-1 requirements is available at any local retailer, and would be used in both holes.

I would first use a a dedicated GL-4 MTL of say 75W90 and see how that shifts.

Most older manual transmissions used an ~ 90 grade gear lube.
