We lived in our "starter house" for 53 years on a 1/2 acre plot. Over the years we built an 18' x 20' addition with a cathedral ceiling. carport, built on front porch, small sun room. 18 x 36 swimming pool, and of course upgraded the inside over the years. We paid $23, 500 in 1972. We hope to get around $310,000. We moved to Masonic Village 3+ months ago. Our new apartment is just under 1200 sq. ft.

In that time my wife and I have made maybe 140 trips to the house throwing stuff away, donating to Goodwill and bringing stuff to the apartment and the storage area we get. Today the basement, attic, and garage are 100% cleaned out and floor swept. there are only two rooms that still have some things in them. My wife is a Packrat and doesn't want to part with anything. Thats the way she was raised her parents taught her that. My mom on the other hand was a very neat tidy person. Naturally we had some "disagreements" in the course of this move. I mostly won out bc it had to be. Stuff needed to go. Can't tell you how much stuff I threw away. Three large garbage bags every week for 14 weeks ( 42 large bags) and 3 pickup loads to the local incinerator. Many dozen trips to Goodwill.

This has been a huge burden on me bc I did most of it. Except for the last 2 weeks I would wake up with dread in the mornings. After I had my coffee that greatly improved...lol. We are almost there and will be ready to list by the end of August...Four months of blood sweat and tears!!. Wish I had known years ago what I know now: Stuff needs to be gotten rid of.

The other thing is that we were not going to move til next year but at the end of last year we were told that if we comitted before the end of 2024 we would save $7000 off the purchase price. So we got ithe apartment for $225,000. So for all you packrats out there: BEWARE!! lol.

I feel your pain. My wife retires in 2 years and since we've decided to move when she does, I've had the enviable task of getting rid of stuff. Our 3rd floor is essentially storage and contained many unopened boxes of whatever since we moved in 18 years ago. Made it easy to tote to donate or landfill. Have worked on this floor since the beginning of June and have about 90% of it cleared out. 2 more floors to go 😐.

There is nothing worse than moving to me.. I don't know how folks do it that move every couple years. Glad you made it!

Now that I have a shop full of stuff in addition to the house its even more unimaginable.. I plan on living in my current place forever.
We only moved 3 times in the last 25, so not too bad...........I mean well not too many times. But yeah it SUCKS. This will be our last property. We are already looking at beachy condos in the right spot. Needs walking to groceries, etc. Looking at Hawaii as well.

Can anyone say TOOL SALE!!???

Moving sucks when your "mature". I moved from my 27 yr. house to a new place and also sold my weekend ''camp'' to be in its town full time. Tools? I've got freaking doubles up the yazoo. Yard tools, OPE and hand tools.

I feel your pain, only I'm the pack rat. My wife wants me to get rid of stuff, and I did a little selling and tossing. My good stuff, no way!! I tell her that she and my son can sell it when I die. I'm thinking of putting price tags on some of my valued possessions so they don't sell them off at fire-sale prices, and the losses haunt me in the afterlife. Good luck!!

Me and my brother had to clean out our parents house when they passed away. This was a HUGE time saver for us -we had a estate sale on a saturday and what did not sell we took 1 pickup truck load to goodwill. The following Saturday we had a very large dumpster delivered to the driveway and emptied the remaining old stuff in to dumpster,so we did all of this in 2 1/2 days!

Not sure if you are going to leave any furniture in the house. I am a big believer in staging an empty house with furniture, beds, nice bedspreads and pillows. Many people have trouble imagining the house with no furniture. Also, make sure the front door and garage door do not squeak. Good luck.

When I sold my townhouse I wanted to empty it but the agent told me it would be better to remove a couple pieces of furniture that made rooms look smaller and rearrange what was left for that reason.

Truer words were never spoken. Twelve moves (duty stations) in a 26-year USAF career. The thirteenth was to come back to TX . Ironically, this last move was not only the easiest, it was also the only one performed on my own nickel.

Hardest thing by far was the effect on the kids, pulling them from their schools and friends every few years. Immensely difficult for them.

We did not have to deal with that. We won't have a bit of problem getting more than we want IMHO The housing market here is fabulous.
