getting new Honda Accord

good morning everyone! thanks for all your help! this week, i am getting a new Honda Accord.

should i change the oil after 500 miles? i hear that a new engine makes metal shavings, etc.

i hope to keep this car 10 years.
anything else I should do to perfectly maintain it?

Probably not shavings but high amount of metal in the oil, copper will be one of them. You will hear two schools of thought here. Leave the factory oil it as i has some moly and break-in additives that need to be there. And the get it out early. I look at it this way. If you had a car with 30-100 k on it and did an oil analysis that came back high in metals, they would recommend changing it no one would say leave it in. So i would do this. But its just my opinion.
 
thank you bryan. i would feel better changing the oil, after 500 miles, to mobil one. that likely could not hurt. i am protecting my investment for the next 10 years.

any other maintenance ideas?

Personally what I've done (incl 4 Honda powered vehicles) is a 1000 mile OCI for the first one then 3k after that then follow the manual/OLM.

Honda has a bunch of Moly (mostly assembly lube IMO) to off set the extra metal in the oil that will be present. Today I'd do a 1500-2000 mile OCI followed up with a 3-4k then follow the OLM.

I've never had ANY issues with an engine that could be traced to changing the oil early. Everything (but one that had "issues" with head gaskets") goes hundreds of thousands of miles with ease if the engine was well designed. Some almost 400,000 miles before it could go no longer.

In most cases, I would agree that the FF should be drained early.
Honda, though, is very specific in encouraging that the factory fill be left in for at least a reasonable run, even up to the mileage allowed by the OLM.
I would probably just grit my teeth and run your FF to at least 50% OLM.
Remember that engines are built in very clean environments, and are usually very well machined today, so the amount of break-in debris should be small.
The oil filter will catch any particles large enough to do damage.
If Honda thought that an early drain and fill was desirable, they'd say so.
Subaru does, for example.
Honda recommends that the FF be left in for a reason, and I tend to trust their judgement on this.

Yep, for sure. I've never gone the MM 15% 'recommendation'. Usually ~4-5k.

As said, the FF moly is most likely assembly lube. And after reading some of the Honda FF UOA's posted here, ~2-3k max seems reasonable and prudent to me. I wouldn't dump it at 500, but if you feel comfortable with 1k FF oci that would be ok imo. I doubt it would hurt a thing for the longevity of the engine, might help?

Did you get a 4 or 6 banger?

Yes, change it at 500-1000 miles.

M1 would be fine as it has some Moly in it, but add a few ounces of Lubro-Moly MOS2 if you want to boost up the Moly some more.

You don't want "Metal Soup" in too long as you can see from a 1st drain in my round, black drain pan from a new engine below...

The manual specifically states not to change it early.

Up to you to listen to Honda engineers or internet forums.
 
If you do drain it early I'd just fill it with another oil that has high moly (Redline or PYB) not M1 for the first oil change then change to what ever you please.

+1. That works too.

Some people don't mind leaving metal shavings in their engine. Sure the engine will last with shavings floating around longer. ...but not as long as if you were to get the shavings out!

OP: Are you going to keep this car a very long time or just a while? If you're going to sell it, it won't much matter to you what you do.

If you plan on keeping it a very long time, get the shavings outta there.

It's your money & expense, not theirs.

If you don't get the shavings out and leave the factory fill in, Honda engines will last a very long time.

Honda has said for a long time (Honda Service News articles from 1996 and again in 2006) that for proper break-in you should leave the factory fill in until the first scheduled maintenance.

to answer, it is the v 6 motor. i hope to keep this car forever. my friend had something like 4 or 5 hondas, one was a civic, all the rest accords. he got over 200,000 miles from them.
look, the worst that could happen is I spend around $60 for mobil one oil change too often, and keep the car a LONG time. i want this car to last WAY beyond when it is paid off!!!!
any other advice? it is an automatic trans.
example: when do I change the
1. transmission fluid
2. radiator fluid
3. brake fluid
4. steering fluid
anything else?

Not much.
We've had two Civics pass 200K, and we have one Accord there now.
All of these cars were sticks.
Regular oil changes (I now like 5-6K, although that's shorter than I could do, as verified by UOA of the '97 after 6K), certainly do the drain and fill of the automatic as Honda recommends and maybe change the brake fluid and the coolant every few years.
On the timing belt engines, and your V-6 is one, replace the belt or belts every 100K without fail, and do the water pump at the same time, as well as the balance shaft belt if there is one.
My favorite Honda tech recommends tensioner replacement only at the second change of the water pump and timing belt.
A failure of the timing belt is usually fatal to the engine, but problems with belts changed in line with Honda's recommendations are very rare.
Your Accord should easily do 200K and from what I understand, the trouble that used to afflict the automatic with the V-6 are now a thing of the past.

Answers are in your owners manual. You will find that, in general, the answer is, "not very often".

Good luck with your car as well, Bob.
We've has six Hondas and have always had good experience with them.
Hondas always seemed worthy of trust, at least the ones we've owned.
I am starting to feel the same way about Subarus as well.
Enjoy the Accord, and the V-6 is plenty strong.
