did my oil today but tried something different

1) I let it drain overnight
2) I lifted the vehicle's front to get more oil out of the drain pan

I was surprised how much more came out

Perhaps this is why my oil seemed to get dark rather quickly in the past?

while I can see you had fun draining the oil out overnite (trying your best to rid of the old oil as much as possible), truth is, you can never get all the oil out (possible 80%) for there are nooks and crannies inside the engine (and the upper cylinder head cam lobe/valve spring pooling area, etc.) that shall always have oil left in there.

If you want visual cleanliness from reading your dipstick, consider doing 2 consecutive oil change (perform a second oil change after a day or so). That should lighten the oil colour significantly.

Otherwise, don't bother (IMHO). It's an utter waste of time.

(*if it makes you sleep better, then by all means, do it*)

Q.

p.s. I am anayl but not to the point of loosing sleep over some leftover oil inside my crankcase and try to drain them out by leaving the drainplug off overnite.

I just did an OC last week. As usual, I drained it for about a half hour. Then, I put my weight down on the corner of the bumper and bounced the car up and down. With each bounce, a significant burp of old oil came out. I would guess a dozen bounces caused near a half quart total or so to drain that would not have otherwise. This only took a few seconds to do, then I tightened everything up. With the half hour drain and rocking the car, I think that was the best point of getting most all out without going to extreams.

1/2 to 3/4 of a quart

wow, quite a condescending reply

Yes I realize I cannot get it all out - I never assumed I could

I never said I lost sleep over this

1/2 to 3/4 of a quart

Last question, which car was this and how many quarts of oil does this car hold with the oil filter, is it like 5 or 6 quarts of oil.

RAV4 V6
Holds 6.5 quarts!

Good one.

I've done this, then flushed a little cheap oil behind it to push even more out...

That's actually quite a bit! Worth it if you have the time. Helps for extended drains.

The dry fill on my CX7 is listed at 6.8 quarts. A drain gets ~ 5&3/4 quarts out and the refill is listed at approx 6 quarts. The remainder is in the turbo, oil cooler, lines, cyl head and ??. I think it is normal to most engines to have up to 20% remaining over the "dry fill" I'm not convinced it is a good thing to have all the oil channels drained using an extra long drain time.

On my 3500 Savanas with factory oil coolers there is a LOT of oil in those 3/8 lines.

But I do not allow them to drain any longer than necessary to get the sump clear. We do use a jack and stands to help it happen faster.

This helps us get oil pressure faster on the restart.

A guy wrote click & clack explaining his "extra step" to remove oil from his car. After the oil had mostly been emptied, he'd start the engine and run it a few minutes to get the extra out. [censored]

WOW - that is SCARY! I'd be more afraid to damage my engine by running dry vs. damage my engine by leaving a 1/2 quart of dirty oil!

The oil in the engine was lubricating seconds before you shut the motor off to do an OC. Not sure why there is a fascination with purging it from the motor.

I drain until it stops draining in a stream, then the plug goes back in. No sense turning a 15 minute job into a 4 hour extravaganza. JMO.

edit: It was once explained to me that perhaps married men may want to extend time it takes for an OC to capitalize on the "personal time" away from other responsibilities.

i very often do the same. put it up on ramp or ramps the night before. this saves time, too. if the drain in on the side, i use one ramp only, to tilt the car that way. if drain on back, i use two ramps to drain the maximum possible oil.

Typically I let the oil drain an hour to about 2 hours at most. I drop the plug, grease the car, check tires, etc, drop the filter, and replace it. Then I'll cut the lawn or do something else that needs to get done. By that time 1-2 hours has past. I don't think more than a few ounces additional oil will come out with an overnight drain. JMO
