My goal is to polish the roof of my 1999 pickup. It's not half as shiny as the hood.
And I want to use cleaner wax on my fiberglass boat.

What pads do I need to get?

The compounding pad is likely what you'd want for your pickup, followed by polishing and then waxing. So I'd get all three for that task. The boat would likely need the compounding and polishing pads for their respective strengths.

Be warned, the backing plate that shipped with the early ones was too large for a standard 6" pad. A 5.5" backing plate was recommended. Double-check before using it for a while, as that larger backing plate was reported to chew up pads pretty well.

HF polisher is good but get lake country or other pads. Hf pads arent that great. Try amazon for pads

I have the HF DA and love it. I bought the HF pads as well, they get the job done but will get chewed around the edges if your not careful.

I tried some of those HF pads on a boat when I got my polisher, didn't want to test them on a car, they sure didn't last long. Buff and Shine or Lake country last much longer.

I used my HF polisher to do a full paint correction on my 2010 Fusion, and man did it do a great job! I will say that I agree with everyone regarding the HF pads. They did the job but I tore through a ton of them when I did my car. They just don't seem to hold up.

Where would you buy a 5" backing plate for a HF dual action polisher? Are they all standard sizes?

+1 I have nothing but Lake Country pads and if you keep them clean they will last you a long long time.
