I have a habit of calling Sprint PCS every two years and saying "I'd like to cancel my account" when they ask why I say, "the antenna on my phone is broke and I can get a free phone by signing up with t-mobile." They always offer free phone.....This evening, they offered me a Sanyo 8300 to stay with them for free and they knocked 5% off my monthly bill. The phone was probably a hot item last year, but it suits my needs. In Feb 2004, it was a free Samsubg VI 660.

you have to sign a new contract, which is when you get a free phone anyway....after contract is up... you just have to ask for a phone dude, you dont need to threaten to leave...

Even though I don't have a phone, I can usually get a RAZR (Motorola) for free w/T-Mobile (1-yr contract) from our AcuraZine site sponsorer, if I ever wanted to. But yes, its quite competitive, so you'll be surprised as to how badly a particular company wants to keep a customer.

I'm with Verizon. The original number (the actual account) gets a $100 credit every two years toward new phones. I can upgrade any of the add on phones at the two year agreement rate (anywhere from $19 on up).

So I got new phones for the wife and kids ..but the wife didn't like it. I have her (intended phone) and I know why. They're so packed with features that you need to go through a learning curve to make them functional. We don't have a "cellphone lifestyle" ...we hit the list ..select the family member and hit send ...we don't even enable the speed dial feature our usage is so limited. I would normally, with my usage, just get a prepaid phone ..but the additional lines were just $9.95/month (plus the communication taxes

) ..so it's a moot point. The plan covers all our usage since 99% of our calls are to each other.

Be carefull with verbal contracts. I recently agreed to a new contract with Cellular One without seeing an actual contract. I ended up having issues with the contract and they won't let me out of the contract without paying $20 per unused month as an early cancellation fee. I tried to straighten this out with the customer service dept, but they won't do anyhting for me, even after I explained that I have been a loyal customer for 6 years.

I ended up keeping things as they were and reporting them to the state attorney general's office for misleading me into a contract that I didn't want. This just happened last week so I haven't heard anything back yet.

I will never do business with Cellular One again.

I always get the free cell phones. I have found over the years that the free phones last just as long as the more expensive ones. A few years ago I paid for a nice Nextel Motorola, and all I had was problems with it. Since then, nothing but the free cheapies for my wife and I, Joe
