The only problem with buying a large item like this from an online store is a hassle should you need to return it if something is not right with it. I mean, it's not as simple as picking up a box and carrying it into a UPS store.
Pete makes a good point - I also bought from a nearby B/M chain store and got free delivery during x-mas season. Although there were better deals online, i just wanted to make sure i can physically return the item myself, if needed.
Plasma has come a longggggggggg way. No more burn in issues, better color reproduction than lcd, MUCH better blacks than lcd, 600Hz so no ghosting what so ever, and they only use SLIGHTLY more power than an LCD.
But then again I was poking through Google Newspaper Archives and saw some 1981 TV ads. Sure you can buy a new Fairmont for $5588, but a new color 25" console was on sale for $588. OUCH!
$588 today will buy a no-name 46" or a nice brand name 37". I don't think it's worth it though. We watch movies on a $75 TV we got off Craigslist. It's a 32" Toshiba CRT and it's pretty big. If it were widescreen like an LCD or LED TV it'd be equivalent to a 40" model.
But if a flat panel TV gets bought in this household, it'll be 4-5 years from now when the toddlers are old enough not to touch it. And it will be big, and it will get a wall mount, and I will cry when I hand over the debit card because I'm not getting a flat panel unless it's bigger than I am. So they better be making cheap 72" TV's by then because I'm 5'11".
