Getting a new TV...What do i look for?

The 550 series are 60 Hz. That's why it's being phased out.
Wal-mart is just now getting some 120 Hz models in or on display.
If it were me, I'd drop down a size and go up to 120 Hz. instead.
But you are not me, so get the biggest and best you can of any of the three best brands and don't look back.

the pn50b550 is a plasma and its HZ is 600.

whats teh successor of the pn50b550?
bb clearance @ 979. think i'll just head to costco/bestbuy to see what they have going

I stand corrected Calin. The 550 in the LCD line is the older 60 Hz.
I don't follow the plasma sets.
California outlawed the plasma sets from what I've read (energy hogs).

This is complete and utter rubbish and shouldn't be repeated as fact.

The panny plasma panels from last year have a half life rating of 100,000 hours. How long did you own your last TV? 100,000 hours works out to years and years of viewing pleasure. Do the math.

Also, do you think the backlights in LCD TV's last forever?.....Surprise, they are rated at anywhere from 60,000 to 100,000 hours as well. Either tech will lose brightness over time, the plasma is in no way worse than LCD with regard to life expectancy AT ALL!

It should be noted that the newer LED LCD TV's DO have a longer life expectancy, because the LED light source should last a lot longer. But a typical CCFL LCD TV won't last any longer than a typical Plasma TV....FACT.

my options are now opened to led LCDs. my dad said ~2200$ is okay. any suggestions. we saw the 55 samsung led lcd 120. it looked nice

Where is the TV set going to be sitting in, a living room, or the basemant? This is important, because LCD's are generally better suited for bright rooms, as they are brignther than plasmas at thge expense of contrast and black levels. Plasmas are better for dark rooms, as they are not as bright, but the picture quality will be much better.

Hopefully you saw the picture I posted earlier. That was from 55" Samsung LED LCD 120Hz.

a bit OT:
Really, guys...always these comments on "i don't care what TV / who pays xxx dollars for a tv ...." etc etc

Some people do care about pic quality, sound quality, and some people don't, so can't bash/criticize people who spend a bit more for better electronics, if it matters to them.

I mean, we're all about using very specific better oils and additives, air filters, waxes, clays, polishes, light bulbs, etc etc, and sometimes paying for them more than people who don't care or even think about what oil/wax/polish they use ... would it be fair for those "don't care" people to say "...xxx dollars for OIL? are you nuts" to us?
probably not.

It's a personal preference to choose what to be picky about...
some people are picky about better electronics, some about better computers, some about better cars, oil, clothes etc etc ...
and some people about all of those..

(speaking about clothes, there's a good example: me: I can spend more on electronics, good audio quality and a car, but don't care about spending much on clothes - but I don't see it as "crazy" if someone does spend a bit on clothes - they probably don't care about my stereo - and that's FINE -we can ALL co-exist, IMO)

The $2200 price seems high for around here; don't know about California prices.
Shop around, and check for sales.
Best Buy, and a few Electronic/TV stores have better prices than that.
Occasionally one or the other will throw in a DVD player for free (?).

while i agree people can do as they please, the argument that because we spend more on oil like some spend more on electronics is bunk; i don't waste money on oil... just as i try not to waste money on anything else, note that i say "try".
