German Castrol Question

Due to this forum, a long time ago I used German Castrol and am interested in obtaining some again. From my reading, it seems they've changed bottles and formulas somewhat, but now I'm confused on which to buy.

Typically it seems it was 0w30, but is this still the only case for true German Castrol? I'm in the US, so AutoZone or PepBoys would be my only options. What exactly am I looking for on the bottle now so I know I'm getting the good stuff?

This is for my '99 Nissan Maxima.

I believe that Castrol's 0w30 is being replaced with 0w-40. AZ has 30 wt on clearance, so you might want to stock up...

Should only be 0w30 that says made in germany. There is a new 0w40 that says made in Belgium.

I'm at a local AutoZone now, and they have 0w30 Castrol Edge with SPT, made in Germany, but it's normal price of 8.99.

Any info about the clearance?

I think the new 0w40 may actually be replacing the US made 5w40 but I don't think anyone knows for sure.

The best way to get either GC or BC is on an OCI special at Autozone or AAP as far as I know.

AZ clearances are sporadic and seem to be regional so it may not be on clearance where you are, it isn't here either.

i just bought EDGE FST at autozone today for $4 a qt. i know its not GC but for that price a 5w30/10w30 FST would be a good buy for the maxima.

The 0w30 grade is the only one that is "Made in Germany" and that's what has been commonly known as GC. The label now says Castrol EDGE with SPT.

However, Castrol now also sells other Euro grades: EDGE with SPT 0w-40 and 5w-40. These are made in Belgium if I remember correctly. Advance Auto Parts carries them, and so does AZ, I think.

The only one made in Belgium is the new 0w40. The 5w40 is US made and is a weak sister compared to the other two IMO, although it meets some fairly tough specs used oil analysis indicate it doesn't hold up anywhere near as well as GC. Nobody had done a used oil analysis on BC yet that I know of but it is generally thought to be closer to GC than the 5w40 is.
