I'm seriously hunting for a new car, and have put inquiries into a fair number of regional dealers. So far I've tried to stay within NY state and within a 2-3 hour (200 mile) drive for me. I'm concerned about remitting taxes and out of state licensing/registration snafus if I go out of state. How much of a concern should I have on those points? (note: financing isn't an issue, so no concerns with dealer financing games)

lots of dealers near state borders are used to selling to out of state customers, happens here between Easton, PA/Phillipsburg, NJ all the time.

Have you tried delaware and new hampshire?

Take note that some makes and regions have a middleman that tacks on junk the dealers have to take. Toyota comes to mind. If you find hundreds of dollars tacked on for a "northeast prep package" or other drivel, this could be happening.

I live in Iowa and a few years ago, I bought a car from a dealer in Louisiana. Did the deal over the phone. Put down a deposit with a credit card, had the dealer fax me a signed contract listing the purchase price. Then I flew down, bought the car, and drove it home. Worked like a charm.

Good idea. Making a drive is worth it. Of the dealers I've contacted so far, nobody's willing to move much if all.

You don't say what kind of vehicle you're looking for or what you consider a fair deal, but in my area there isn't a new car that can't be had for nearly invoice (+ or -). You must be shopping for the 'killer' deal to be experiencing such difficulties.

Similar deal here; live in WA, bought my car in CA. I put a deposit down via CC over the phone, flew down and picked it up. The dealer (Buerge Ford) had done a lot in internet purchases, and it went without a hitch.

I got a temporary permit to drive the car (from the WA DMV) then registered it in WA. I only paid WA sales tax on it, and did that when I registered the car.

Chevy Cruze Eco 6MT. Either a 2011 with the Connectivity and Cruise package, or a 2012 Eco that has those features standard. Looking for $20k or less out the door after TTL. Is that trying for a killer deal?

Every dealer will know how to write up an out-of-state sales order. If purchased in a state that issues paper plates, the dealer will issue a "transit" plate (as probably not charging sales tax).

In your home state, every DMV worker will know how to help you fill out paperwork and calculate fees for an out-of-state purchase. It will be easy.

The only catch that comes to mind is emissions compliance. If your state has adopted the California standards, you have to make sure that the car is compliant. If your state only requires EPA standards, no worries.

Multiply the MSRP (less $750 destination) of the Eco by 0.96 for fair discounted price; add destination. At those numbers, the dealer is nearing so-called 'invoice'...his profit will be the applicable 'holdback' of circa $700. If you can negotiate any additional discount of the holdback (doubtful on an Eco), that would be a killer price.

NY is California emissions. Not sure about Ohio.

Hallmark, thanks for the tip! That explains a lot about dealer actions encountered today while phoning around.

Ended up putting a deposit on a Cruze Eco 6MT in Buffalo. I verbally agreed to a fair deal that was the cheapest I'd run across so far, so I bit. Will post more details in a separate thread once everything's inked and signed.
