I have a chance to buy a gasoline poered 15 kw generator. For 700$. 5 yrs old by a contractor. Runs good only puts out 200 volts instead of 240 v. Is that a problem for a 2700 square ft house. Heat pump, water heater.
Does a north star from Northern Tool,15 kw portable have brushes? Is this expensive? Sounds like bad brushes to me.

I would contact the manufacturer and ask them.

All NorthStar Generators use a reliable, 100% copper-wound, brushless generator head for years of long lasting power. Brushless Generator heads are proven to be superior in efficiency, performance, and last longer than brush style generator heads

So my guess is its either not getting up to the proper RPM or there maybe a regulator problem. I have honestly no idea, just pulling thoughts out of by backside.

So it could be that the engine is bogging down under load. Carb problem, maybe. Or It needs a new regulator. Do you know how much a regulator Costs an can i do it myself, with medium mech skills.

A new one is 3500 or so.

Check volts vs neutral. If it's 120 on one side and 80 on the other something got fried. 120 and 120 is better. Put a load on, like a 500 watt halogen light, preferably one on each side. At 15 kw it will sneeze at these loads, but it helps the voltage regulator do its job.

I don't know much about generators but if the windings get screwed up inside, or solid state stuff inside the regulator, you can be in over your head. A chinese generator from northern tool you'll have to reverse engineer as parts will be hard to find from one month's run to the next.

Buy the generator for $500 and you will end up with $1000 in repairs because the low voltage fried the sensitive components in your furnace, computer, TV, etc.

If you want reliable generator power, go with a US made product. This is no place to buy the lowest and cheapest you can find.

JMHO.

I generally agree. My generator suggestion is always to purchase a name brand, well known and reliable unit. Can't go too far wrong purchasing a true Honda or Yamaha. I prefer contractor grade, open frame units.
