“GM’s battery operations in the U.S. are now so vast and expansive that the company is already producing more cells than Tesla, according to Bloomberg’s latest deep dive into its EV plans.”

Plus another article today about the new Lithium-Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery in the Silverado EV that cuts cost by $6,000 - and still provides more range than a Cybertruck or Lightning. The next-gen Bolt gets a much-cheaper LFP packs too. Rumors are that’ll be a CATL design, but made in the USA under license by Japan’s TDK.

There is something that is very un-true here. 5000 cells per hour is what GM is claiming.

Tesla on the other hand is producing well North of 100,000 cells per hour, 24/7/365 in their US plants. Maybe as many as 150,000 per hour, when we include the various types of cells that Tesla produces.

Total cell energy storage capacity they mean (I agree it’s not worded well). The large format Ultium/LG pouch cell is ~108,000 mAh vs ~4,900 mAh for a 2170. So somewhere around 21x the energy capacity of a 2170.

I believe Tesla is working on a strippie Model Y, if that interests you.
Possibly?

Teslas are too fancy for me. I want the Nissan Versa of EVs ... just something with good batter management so a Leaf is out.

I'm currently looking at Kia's EVs . I don't know why but there's a TON of them around my office now. Kona EVs.

I am going to eat crow......couple years ago I crapped all over GM over the pretty horrific Ultium rollout when it was just the Hummer, Lyriq and Blazer but it really seems they have hit their stride now. Seems they just needed to get the printing press fine tuned.

Good for GM!

At the earnings call I think Tesla plans on a stripped down model y. Not sure how much more you can strip down a model y short of wood bench seats, no carpet, and no screen. Oh wait ...
Everyone keeps saying this junk, but “stripped” will be a RWD with less speakers. That’s it.

Well, they’re going to have to do something to get sales going. Also, the new Bolt will be coming out most likely before a low cost Tesla.
The cars are hardly the problem. It remains to be seen if more Tesla offerings can stop the bleeding, especially in the short run.
Time will tell...

No, I don’t see them as a problem either. What I see is a problem is Tesla’s limited product line.

They are no longer the only game in town, now much more variety of models available on the marketplace from all different manufacturers for those who want an electric vehicle.

I’m not against Tesla at all, it’s a mature product and reliable. It’s just that not everyone who is purchasing electric vehicle wants that style so now there are alternatives

I really hope we can get another Bolt.
Reasonably priced. Reasonable range
I agree, however, it needs to charge faster than 55kw on DCFC. Even something below the market leaders like Hyundai would still be an improvement. If it doesn't get at least 100kw for the first 10 minutes of charging, they are going to limit their market.
