Hi All,

I rarely post anything, but now I'm stumped for an answer on this. I've got a Generac semi-commercial pressure washer model # 00059930. It's due for an oil change for the piston water pump. Owners manual specifies 30wt non-detergent. I just came from my local O'reilly's and all they had was HD 30 which still has a limited additive package. I called Generac customer service and the really didn't know beans as to why ND is specified. After the tech called around, she came back and said she was told that the non-detergent would let the motor run cooler as it would cause less drag on it. That just didn't make sense to me. I'm not a newbie to oils and have read countless post on this forum.

It would seem to me that a good synthetic or at least a good grade oil with a decent additive package would be more logical. BTW, the pistons on this pump are ceramic coated. Could this be the reason for ND oil? Please advise.

Thanks, Jetmech1

OP states that he contacted Generac customer support and they didn't know what oil to use or why.

I don't have the exact answer but you don't want detergents and dispersants in these applications which are in all other oils.

I beleive you are correct and I think I just found out why. I was sorting out all my junk and misc. oils and came across a Campbell Hausfield bottle of air compressor oil. Here's what the bottle says:
Quote:
ISO-100 non-detergent oil NOTICE: use of other oils such as 10w30 can cause carbon to form shortening air compressor life.

Even though this is a high pressure water pump, it would seem they share commonality concerning oil. Still can't figure out why using ND would keep carbon from forming but it's the best explanation I've found so far. ISO-100 is 30 wt oil from a chart I found. So it would seem a good air compressor oil (easy to find) would work.

BTW, When I called Generac customer service, I asked to speak with their engineering dept. The CS told me they didn't have one! I finally pried out of them that they actually source many of their product items off shore. Sad.
