Hi, I'm new here. I have an early 80's lathe that I've only owned for a few months. the manual calls for Shell Tellus 27 in the head and Shell Tellus 22 in the carriage gear box. these have proven difficult to find in my area and spendy. I was wondering if there is a suitable alternative to these oils or if there is something redily available that will do the trick and protect my machine. it is not in heavy or even daily use. but I still want to protect it. any advise is appreciated.

I am surprized that it specs hydralic fluid.
do you have access to mobil or chevron products? I think my lathe specs way oil, mobil vacrtra #2, in the carriage and a gear oil in the head.

thanks, I was surprizes to see it call for hydraulic fluid as well. it is a Turnmaster sold by Lagun Republic. at the risk of sounding embarrassingly uneducated what does AW stand for? and would that be similar to universal tractor fluid?

do you think the stuff they call universal tractor hydraulic oil would be sufficiant. it is about $9.00 a gallon at my local NAPA. AW 32 only comes in 5 gallon size and it's about $50.00. I don't nead 5 gallons.

UTF would be a higher AW/EP oil at a vis of 68 or so.

If that is all you can get I'd use it.
just drian and replace all the old oil.

Thanks for all the info guys. I just found AW32 at Bomgars for under $12.00 for a two gallon jug. again thanks for all the help...... Jason

UTF is an ISO 68, quite a bit thicker than what is called for. I'd use ATF (about a 37 cSt) if you can't find the ISO 32 hydraulics.
Hydraulic oils are common in smaller lathes, as they have low presures and often have bronze bearings or gears. Bigger lathes run 220 or 320 EP oils, preferably borate additives to protect the bronze.

And the Way oils recomended go on the rails to smooth out the work and eliminate the jumping.
