Gear oil viscosity insanity

My old '84 F150's manual box was drained at 90,000 miles and I filled it with 10w40 motor oil. Still running today with that oil at well over 225,000 miles. (I know the current owner.)

No doubt that manual transmission fluid can have a dramatic effect on life and shift quality. My Jeep Cherokee has an AX-15 5 speed which has soft "yellow metal" synchronizers. I've run MT-90 for the last 50K miles and shift quality is the same as when I put the oil in. I can't say the same for the Coastal that I ran for 40K miles before.

As for replacing SAE 90 with a multigrade oil, I'm simply trying to match the specs of SAE 90 at high temperature, so as protection is not sacrificed. I understand the benefit of quality additives and EP agents.

The Chevron gear oils mentioned above have caught my eye. Unfortunately, the are hard to find around here with the nearest listed distributor about 1 hour away. I'm a big fan of Chevron/Havoline and would run the ESI

Thanks, yeah, best bet for ATF trannies is Redline with the heavy dose of antiwear and extreme pressure additives.

With the exception of the B.W./Tremec T56, although there are 100+ page threads on other sites debating this very topic. Some claim their T56 was destroyed one week after adding RL D4, others claim that they've been using it for 5 or more years of abject abuse with NO problems, so who knows??

There were also reports over at the Contour Enthusast Group about problems with RedLine MTL in the Contour MTX-75 manual trans. The fluid generated sludge which clogged the lube channels on the differential cross shafts causing sever wear and transmission failure.

The failures were not handled well in that no one bothered to send the oil from the failed transmissions in for analysis. Some have wondered if it was just a bad batch but most over there are staying away from RedLine MTL. Those that don't want to spend about $20.00 a quart for Ford's fluid for this trans have reported good luck with Royal Purple and Torco.

Straight 90 will be MORE shear stable than any 75/90.
Chevrons borate gear oils are the best.

Bruce, didn't you say that Rotella gear oils also use the Borate additive pack?

There are several gear oils that have some borate in them, Chevron is primarily based on borate. For dino oils they are excellent and have quite a few certs from the HD industry. I've used them for quite a while on HD stuff and had good luck with the stuff.

Not sure if Shell gear oils are borate based or not, but I don't recall ever reading about Shell using borate, I think they are using a more traditional additive package in their gear oils.

I have some spec sheets on the Shell EW dino stuff (extended warranty), as well as some of the actual product. I will have to look it up and/or call their techs for the answer to this question (IF they'll even give out that info

BWs tend to have a questionable service life anyway...my main experience with BW is their transfercases, which tend to barf their guts under normal use without provication...if you can't tell, I'm not a BW fan...

As far as you know, do the Torco RGO (dino) and Schaeffers 209 have any borate additive??

I spoke to a Shell tech today and he confirmed that NONE of the Spirax (this is the name for their gear oils, NOT Rotella) formulations contained ANY borate compounds in any form.
BTW; I know it's

, but I asked him (just to see what the response would be) which group(s) base oil made up the Rotella T synth. & Helix synth. 5W-40s. He said he is NOT allowed to give out that "proprietary" info.
