I bought a project sailboat and it came with a 1961 Mercury 60 6hp outboard. The lower unit was detached. Came with a bunch or different water pump impellers. I think I figured out what parts to use to reassemble it.
My question is about the gear lubricant. Originally they used a lubriplate grease for this year. 1962 onwards used 80/90 gear oil.
Not sure what’s in it now. Fill and vent screws were removed. Nothing leaking out.
I’d rather use gear oil so I can do an inspection drain to check for water leaks. Not sure how to remove grease other than to push in more and see what the old grease looks like.
Any suggestions on converting to gear oil instead of lubriplate grease?
