Yep big single,i would say a twin would run hotter yes, that gauge is a little hard to decipher the marks on it but i would say i didn't see anything over 190-200 that day mowing.

I still say you cant beat a briggs nowadays.

Those are nice engines. I had the 17hp Briggs "AVS" w/out oil filter on the ~2004 MTD rider I had. The engine was the only good thing about it. Strong runner. Fairly smooth & decent on fuel. I think the only bigger single cyls you can get are the Kohler Courage series singles. They actually go out to 22hp for a one lunger!

Just get an hour meter. Most of them show rpms while running. They are usually ~ $40. They are available for spark plug (induction) type, vibration, etc.

B&S makes them. They're all over EBay, and I have one on my Yamaha Generator. They flash every 50hrs I think for oil changes, and are really easy to hook up. As I recall, just a ground wire and an induction wire wrapped around the spark plug lead.

You should be able to get a dial type working on there. Many of them could be set to record single cylinder engines. Something from a motorcycle application might work. There's tons of single cylinder "thumpers" with tachs out there. I might even look at a motorycle junk yard if you have one near you.
