Gasoline brand based on oil brand?

Well, thanks guys. It was really only a question out of curiosity, because I only use BP gasoline, and the reason for that is back when it was Amoco, their gas always stopped my engines from knocking. Then BP bought them out, and it was still sold at BP under the name of Amoco, but I don't even know if that is still the case. Now that BP owns them, they seem like a top notch outfit, and I thought to myself about using Castrol GTX to stay in line with the brand..lol. Sort of like making sure your pants match your shirt. But I know that in this regard it makes no difference.

In the late 70's I worked a graveyard shift 11-7 for an Exxon owned station. It was in a commercial area where there were several stations in a row. There was a Sunoco station directly across from me. On one than more occasion an unmarked fuel tanker would stop and add fuel at both stations. Seeing this thread reminded me, I never questioned it at the time, but it does make you wonder????

When I had my RX7 I was using Havoline TCW3 and always tried to get gasoline at Texaco.

Nowadays, I premix a bottle every few months trying to find a connection. I usually get Conoco gas from Flying J, but when its close to the same or higher than Texaco, Shell or Chevron I go there instead.

I'm not too picky, I'll buy grocery store gas if its at least .10 to .15 cents cheaper

.10 - .15 cents cheaper for grocery store gas is not worth the savings..IF you intend to keep your cars as long as I do. I know, I know, gas is gas...but additvies are NOT additives. Brand name gas is additized much better. Any fuel experts on here? I'm sure you could attest to that.

No....I try and only use Chevron or Texaco gasoline when possible. I never buy cheap gas unless I have no choice. About four years ago I had my injectors clogged from using some screwed up mix (Conoco refinery) from a local 76 station. The idiots caused millions in damages to folks vehicles....and sent out free repairs/injector cleanings to anybody that purchased their gas in the effected stations (me included). I knew something was wrong with my car before any repair vouchers were sent out....it ran terribly. So....needless to say I avoid ALL Conoco gas and any cheap brands if I can. Chevron (with Techron...a real additive that works well in keeping injectors clean) has been real good for me these past several years. I don't care if the gas station across the street (7 eleven) is 5 cents cheaper either.

I run a lot of gas throughout the week. I use between 2-3 tanks per week, that's around 12-14 gallons each fill. My 02 Honda Accord gets ~28 MPG, and I have not seen gas make any difference at all. I normally run Mobil gas, however it's just because that's the cheapest in my route to work, and also in the area. All of the people that really err on the brand of gas, and my ex wife also did the same thing thinking places "watered down their gas" I have news for you........ All of the gas is pumped out of the same place, not only have I seen the exact same trucks dumping gas in these tanks of different stations I asked two times at two different stations where they are hauling from, and both times the reply was all of the gas comes from a central location about 40 miles away (location disclosed) and that it's all the same.

This may just be my area, however I have to wonder when jumping through hoops to get rebated oil, the newest slickest ultra, or whatever.. if gas and oil has anything in common with the brand name what a fool I have been !!

Back to back post, however I wanted to give some more info related to diesel. When I had a Dodge 2500 Cummins Turbo Diesel I noticed a difference in diesel fuel from different locations. I once filled up at a place who had the hose in the ground tank filling the tank, and that was a huge mistake, the fuel was just bubbles coming out of the pump. I was surprised as I always heard/read that it was best to get diesel when they were filling the tanks. I hope some day to get another diesel engine, I have always loved a diesel, how they sound, smell, and work (the newer engines) however the transitions they make with injectors, pumps etc are paid for by the consumers !!

When the difference is .15 to .20 cents from a top tier gas, I go to the Costco or Fred Meyer stations for the $$ savings...

But...I use Redline SL-1 fuel system cleaner about twice a year and add a 1.5 to 2 ounces of SL-1 for every fill-up to maintain a clean fuel system. It keeps the entire fuel system clean and lubricated. Its a great product....

I always use Exxon/Mobil gas because I get $.15 off with their credit card. I also always thought M1 was the best oil to use but this website has got me thinking!

Top Tier is anything but a marketing gimmick. A gas company can't just label themselves TT. It is earned by a quality product meeting certain additive/emissions standards. TT gas is a better product than non TT gas. Not saying you can't get a good non TT gas but saying it is a marketing gimmick is just inaccurate. No offense intended by this.

I just use the least expensive gas I can find, but use Redline once a year. I bought a whole bunch on clearance for $2.40 from AAP.

Who tests the gas so it can be sold as TT? Do the TT people have their own lab(s)?

What are the controls, specifications, and testing methods needed to meet the TT? Or is it just giving the TT organization money so as to meet the requirements?

Why not TT motor oil, tires, fan belts, anti-freeze, etc.? Everybody, on the TT bandwagon!

From the TT Web Site:

Top Tier Detergent Gasoline

"TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is the premier standard for gasoline performance. Six of the world's top automakers, BMW, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and Audi recognize that the current EPA minimum detergent requirements do not go far enough to ensure optimal engine performance.

Since the minimum additive performance standards were first established by EPA in 1995, most gasoline marketers have actually reduced the concentration level of detergent additive in their gasoline by up to 50%. As a result, the ability of a vehicle to maintain stringent Tier 2 emission standards have been hampered, leading to engine deposits which can have a big impact on in-use emissions and driver satisfaction. "

Proof with data?

Since the EPA is in charge of emission standards, why do they not come out against (outlaw) gasoline that hampers their emission standards?

Well, I kinda do the Mobil/mobil 1 thing with ther wife's car...

The gas seems to be getting rough around here, so switching to 89 seems to help.

I refuse to use the cheapest gas anymore...

I only use Shell gas, since it is the same price as Speedway in my area. If we had Chevron in our are, that would be my preference based on the Techron additive, however neither would affect my oil choice.

I use Chevron and Texaco whenever possible, however, I buy whatever oil I can get loads of at a bargain price. Only twice have I ever found synthetic 5w30 Texaco, and never found any 5w30 synthetic Chevron.

Most of the oil I have stashed is Valvoline and Royal Purple.

However, I have used lots of SOPUS oil when it was cheap.

In conclusion, I usually don't buy gas with the same brand name as my oil.

i don't have any name brand gas stations in the area besides BP,the local shell station was replaced with some off brand. i don't usually go to the BP unless they're the cheapest, i usually go to road ranger(for the TT fuel) and murphy's at work

No offense taken. Obviously if there weren't those among us who are gullible and susceptible to such schemes, they wouldn't be so prevalent and successful. You are living proof that some marketing gurus are doing a good job. If that makes you happy....well, I'm happy for you.

Didn't know Conoco produce Flying J. That's what I usually use and I get better mileage using this fuel. Also I don't believe in that top tier gas stuff...feel like it's just marketing. Companies pay to have their name added to that list so people can believe that they are "above" the rest. If you noticed, Exxon Mobil isn't on that list! So are we to believe that their gas is garbage? NO!

Once again SWSpotsman, you pontificate and put people down, while offering nothing concrete and factual to back your opinions.

Turkey Hill is owned by Kroger Corporation one of the largest supermarket and C-store operators in the US, with $76 billion in yearly sales. Seems like they have the clout and resources to specify the level of product quality they require from their suppliers. There is a difference in additive quality and quantity between various gasoline brands. You may have convinced yourself otherwise, but that does not equal fact.

There is not much difference honestly. They all come out of the same pipeline and their "brand cleaner" is added at the end. This is coming from someone who have family who works for midstream and downstream oil companies. That's why I DON'T believe in Top Tier gas marketing scheme.
