hey guys i have a 94 sentra that i smell gas from the rear of the car. i have jacked it up and dont see leaks there where a couple rust spots on the tank where i sanded and filled with a epoxy to seal them and they are dry but i still smell gas and have no visible leaks. any suggestions?

Easiest way to find it would be to smoke test it, if you have a smoke machine. Could be a gas cap seal or something simple like that.

under the car the smell is strong i was thinking of changing the cap first and then go from there. is a smoke machine something i can rent?

How bad is the Rust on that car? Seeing that you are from NY. If you already fixed rusted spots that were leaking on the gas tank. In my experience there is always more rust holes than what you see. Judging by the year, rusted filler pipe, cracked rubber lines or the main item based on his prior repair would be something rotted on the top of the gas tank!!!

Yes a smoke machine would be the easiest way to test to find out where the leaks are coming from. Sadly Due to the cost of the machine I don't think anyone is going to rent you one. You might inquire how much a local repair shop would charge you to smoke test the system. JFYI I'd charge aprox $100 buck
