Yes - that's the big picture that is so often ignored and in many cases not even considered.

But of course, many simpletons are suckered in by politicians and media personalities who like to use gas prices as a political tool.

Refineries make plenty of money. That isn't why new ones aren't built...it's because gov regulations make it too difficult to build new ones...

Don't forget NIMBY syndrome.

Ohh yeah! ExxonMobil CEO doesn't want fracking operation near his backyard.

No matter what part of the debate you land on, it’s pretty clear that nobody wants to actually be the one who lives near the site of this type of exploration.

How do we know this? Because one of the opponents of a fracking project in Denton County is Rex Tillerson, CEO of ExxonMobil—a company that proudly touts fracking as an essential part of American energy development.

Get used to it, without the Saudi's manipulating the market were in for a ride.

Buy every new ride like gas is $5 a gallon, because it will be, than it will be $2 a gallon, than $3...

when the new 56mpg mandate kicks in, let's see how high gas prices will go? $5/gallon? The oil companies have to keep making their profit. Also, the government would like higher gas prices, it would force people to downsize their vehicles and into 56mpg cars! win win

Getting more mpg just allows people to drive more on overcrowded roads which consumes more gas as you sit in traffic and the roads wear out quicker, and have more accidents.

We would be better off if vehicles got 15 mpg. Fewer miles driven, less traffic and roads last longer, fewer accidents. Gas would be cheaper probably.

This is a very valid argument, and an example of Jevons' paradox:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jevons_paradox

Efficiency creates demand which, in many cases, produces results at odds with the original intention of the efficiency in the first place.

The ONLY good thing about gas prices is the price can only go so high...it has to be priced low enough so that they can sell it...the market (really, the industry) can raise prices to wherever they want them, but if it doesn't sell, the price has to come down, and gas is not going to sell (anytime soon anyway) in this country for $5...

Our roads don't wear out due to POVs, it's the semis that destroy our roads...

Seems we forgot the high prices from not too long ago. No wonder this country is in such a questionable state of being.

Seems we forgot the low prices of 15 years ago too. Right?

I'm expecting gas prices to flirt with 4 dollars at least by the end of this year, and I do not expect them to go back down either. Automakers (like around here) are freaking out pushing as much as they can to push those mpgs...For one thing, the newer cars have more plastic on them.....

Whether it be government, political, or outside influenced (like middle east), prices will be heading up very soon. This is not some "hyped" thing, it's just simple common sense: money needs to be made, whether you like it or not.....

Gasoline has been traded as a commodity since 1984. You have the power to stabilize your cost by buying a gasoline ETF instead of complaining.

Al, I will pass that on to the guys who at work at the gas station at $8.24/hr.

;-)

1/3 of the price of gasoline is due to "speculation".
what is next for walled street, trade mother's milk?

I live on a residential road with zero semi traffic, and it still needs repairs.

Why do so many people fell they're entitled to cheap gas? I never hear people make claims about what the price of beer, homes, or cars should be, but a lot of people make the statement about gas.

If the government wants 56 mpg cars, the best thing it could do is relax safety regulation on "city cars" and cut some of the weight.

I've been saying all along that if speculation was removed from the pricing process, prices would drop and would stay lower...
