That is SO shortsighted heathenbrewing.

When it finally happens how much do you think it will cost you to buy a loaf of bread, gallon of milk, jar of orange juice for your kids?

School levies will have to be passed just to cover the additional cost of bussing kids to school and back, just for starters.

Everything you purchase goes up. Have you really thought much about the massive shrinkage of lifestyle that can also be a part of what you advocate?

Extra money in the budget for home remodeling, family vacation, ... car repairs? Money to help take care of your elderly parents? (monthly costs for retirement homes is thru the roof)

Discretionary income? Forget it.

Remember that "wasteful" is a subjective value. Thats where discretionary income comes in, or goes out the window as it were.
I'm afraid it si coming eventually, but to wish for it... blows my mind.

Back on topic.. gas was $2.84 for premium last week, today I paid $3.02 at the same Shell station. Took the opportunity to properly inflate my tires, want to see if the Passat can break 50mpg at a steady 45mph with the air off and the windows up. Not that I have much opportunity to drive at that pace here in Houston! Still, paying attention to my driving style, I got nearly 28mpg on the last tank, not bad considering I only live about one mile from the office, so there's lots of short trips in there.

oh come guys, it takes a lot of money to control a most of the planet... you need to understand just how large of a scale and how costly that can get. cut them some slack!

Agreed. Personally, I cant wait until it hits $5.00/gal.

The only way to get most Americans to change their wasteful habits is to hit them in the wallet.

What we need is a "fight terrorism, buy EnergyStar vehicles" campaign alongside a strict EnergyStar specification (e.g. 40+ mpg local, combined and highway) for vehicle fuel efficiency from Washington, but with how things are going, I doubt that is going to happen.

How will that accomplish anything? There will be no such thing as energy independence as a result of buying more fuel efficient reciprocating engine, petroleum fueled, cars.

All that you will do is convert some rickshaw driver into a taxi cab operator due to your making room for him to do so in finite fuel allocation. So, by your definition of "all Arabs are terrorists" (funny movie quote of a western "I thought all white men were brothers") ..they will be terrorists with yaun instead of U$D's.

I guess we'll show 'em ...Ah-HA!!

Still, not slowing these idiots with their jacked up 4x4 trucks going 80 mph (in a 65mph zone) weaving in and out of traffic..

Bill,

If you think gas is that bad in your state try California where the highest I've seen so far is $3.45/gallon of regular. In addition the rich area folks do the same thing as you describe in your area. The big problem is that the price hasn't hit everyone's pocket yet. I'll bet they don't even check the tires and replace the air cleaner filter.

If gas was that expensive, I wonder how much less traffic would be on the road ?

$3.04 for super unleaded at the RaceTrack yesterday. It was $3.12 at the Shell where I usually fill up, which was an increase of 10 cents in 11 days.

I swear my car gets it's best mileage at about 60 mph, is that possible?

Sure. Its called where the engine is operating in the best RPM for torque/hp vs drag from the car vs rolling resistance = best MPG.

My 05 Corolla gets 45-47 mpg around 65 mph. Take it up to 70 mph and its a 43-44 mpg car. Drive @ 75-80 and its 41 mpg. (all on normal gas, the winter blends we are getting now cut my MPG this year by 2 mpg...)

Gas here is now 80 cents more than this time last year.

Can't wait for the 2008 driving season or *if* something happens (SHTF) and the Opec crew gets us $200 a barrel oil.

We all should be slowing down and drilling for oil here in USA.

I drive on I-15 and I'll tell you the most common out of state plate I see speeding and weaving in and out are from CA.

Before our mass growth, drivers would operate with common sense and accidents would be low. Now, it seems every other mile has some semi vs car or someone who was sideswiped / rear ended..

(I'm sounding like a old man..

) But from about 1988-1990 on its been going down hill...

Oh well, wait till gas rationing hits us. (or if they pass their 50-80 cent per gallon gas/environment tax)

Then there will be some changes.

Take care, bill

$3.13 for most of the convenience store chains. I found $3.11 and $3.08 running my daughter back to college (home for the past week due to illness). It was a 125 mile round trip. Ran me about $16 in gas
