So yes, technically, they don't need an oil filter.

Oh, man! I'm glad I wasn't taking a drink when I read that one!

The drained oil may be unfiltered, but the electricity they put out is filtered pretty well.

Not beefing with you....looking to learn something here. A pressurized system doesn not HAVE to have a filter correct?? Kawasaki small engine 6HP I have is pressurized and there is no filter -- at least not a spin on or visible filter.

School me....

BTW I have a a Honda 2000 and the thing is great. QUIET!

Having an oil filter on a small OPE engine is way overrated IMO. Clean air cleaners, fresh, quality fuel and oil changed at a reasonable interval is all you need for a long happy engine life.

How do you splash lubricate an OHV?? My EM6500 is OHV and no oil filter. 13HP motor.

I somewhat agree. Remember that a lot of small engines that have an oil filter are just splash lubricated, but have a small pump that just pumps oil through the filter. IMO, it's a cash-cow for the manufacturers because most customers will buy the overpriced factory filters instead of getting a generic equivalent.

A lot of them still rely on oil being flung up through the cavity that the push-rods protrude through (from crankcase to head).

On Honda GC's, the cam belt carries oil to the top of the head.

So if it said "pressure lubricated" then it would be like a car? I did not know they added filters and still had splash lubrication.

My Subaru/Robin has an OHC engine, but there is a "paddle" on the lower part of the connecting rod cap that dips into the oil and splashes it everywhere. It has a chain to drive the cam and the chain carries oil to the head which has baffles to make sure the oil goes where needed.

Same deal in the Honda GCV series.

Yep, many of them just have a small gerotor pump that does nothing more than circulate sump oil through the filter.

Some have pressurized oiling to just the the flywheel-end crank bearing. There a few different variations out there.
