Gas has shot up 40 cents a gallon over night and is at $4.15/gal here. I don't care what anyone says, the people controlling the commodities and oil markets are a big part of the price increases and volatility. They create bubbles any time they want. That is what they're good at. Real supply and demand is just a side act in comparison. All it is going to do besides make a few people exceedingly rich is drive up the price of everything and cause instability.

Yeah

. What's as bad or worse is to listen to some people says that it's all due to real supply and demand and manufactured market bubbles don't exist. If the people controling the markets want $6/gal gas it'll be $6/gal no matter how much consumers scrimp on gas usage.

They have a noose around our neck and can pull as hard as they want.

The only option is to drive a fuel efficient vehicle.

Or move to a state that doesn't have Speedway (or Marathon because they own "Greedway") stations-since they're the one that drive the ridiculous overnight gas price increases! Keep an eye on them-usually on Tuesday or Thursday mornings, they'll jump before anyone else, & it'll get worse the closer we get to Memorial Day!

We just cancelled our first horse show of the season we always go to (May 7th) due to fuel costs. This is going to be the an extremely expensive year to cut hay for us and the demand is down so we are cutting back on shows and other activities.

Or do what I do & run mostly diesel vehicles & put a couple full 55 gallon drums of diesel in the basement, buy it when it's low, use it when it's high. There's also 40 gallons in the garage for the wife's car, probably enough to last several months-I'd have more, but the alcohol causes it to go bad too fast.

That's kind of sad to hear

. At the rate things are going no one will be able to do much of anything but pay these moneychangers everything they have to just get by.

My sister drives an '04 Vibe (fuel efficient to begin with) but somehow gets free gas at Giant Eagle and has several 5 gal jugs to hold excess gas. I'm not sure how it works, she buys gift certificates and get's a discount on gas and uses coupons and gets a bunch of free groceries. But like I said I don't know exactly how it works lol.

I try to buy gas when it's low, but no one but the market masters know which way up or down, how much and when it will go. For example, last night I saw it was $3.75/gal and that appeared to me still high. I didn't think it would jump to $4.15/the next day. I figured it might drop a little more before going up again. The only thing for certain is it will be volatile thanks to all monkeying around they're doing with the market.

I don't think that's something that most people would want to do due to additional fire hazard, and on top of most having gasoline vehicles.

Part of the problem is, when energy and commodity price start rising, people start buying into things like oil ETFs to get in on the action so to speak. At that point, high prices start becoming a self fulfilling prophecy.

Here in California the beneficiaries are public employees, with incredible pensions and benefits. The LA TIMES just found out that some public hospital president at age 65 is getting a $3,000,000.00 retirement bonus in addition to his $150,000.00 per year pension AND an additional $4,000,000.00 pension perk as well. TAXES are the reason for these high gasoline prices for the most part. the oil company profit on a gallon of gasoline is just a few cents.

Posts like the one that started this thread not getting deleted are why I say the mods unevenly enforce the "no politics" rule. The topic and post is clearly political. If you bash "big oil" or "speculators" your post stays. Criticize unions or big government or the EPA, nomatter how mildly, and your post is gone, and you might even get your account suspended. Simply stating what I've observed many times. Note that I'm not faulting the OP, and this thread is very mild on the "politics index" compared to others I've seen stay becuse the position of the post(s) was deemed politically acceptable on here.

I can't really agree too much on what you say on the moderation. Economics, whether oil prices or unions isn't political. I think threads get locked that are strictly political or that are bashing a specific person or company. I'm just complaining about the market and how it affects the everyday person.

We've been over 4.00 a gallon here in Southern Ca since the second week of March.

The big increases have slowed down but we are currently paying 4.29 in my area.

But I agree with you - I think "supply and demand" has little to do with the current prices. JMHO but that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Most of the money in the oil business is not on the refining or retailing side but on the exploration and drilling side.

You have your buddy 1 post up to thank for turning a normally non political (venting isn't political) into politics. Why would oil price in one state be related to public employees and hospital president retirement fund in another state?

Good catch

. No offense to anyone but that is exactly how it goes. So don't blame the moderators or the thread topic, blame the guilty poster
