An acquaintances problem: long story short, during a road trip, a service garage topped off Hyundai Powertech 6 speed automatic transmission with the wrong fluid. OEM fluid is SP4-M, total capacity is 7.5 quarts. Garage put in 3/4 quart of MOPAR ATF+4. No option to go back to service garage.

Would you be concerned to change out the fluid? Unfortunately, a transmission fluid change was just done a few months ago.

Opinions? Thank you.

Just for kicks I asked perplexity if the two were compatible

(Is hyundais transmission fluid SP4-M, compatible with MOPAR ATF+4?)

and here's what it regurgitated. If you ask it the same question your answer will have the links backing up the answer.

Yes, Hyundai's SP4-M transmission fluid is compatible with MOPAR ATF+4. The SP4-M fluid is a highly friction-modified ATF, similar to MOPAR ATF+4. Chrysler has formally replaced the SP III fluid (which is also used by Hyundai) with ATF+4 in all their applications, indicating the two fluids are compatible. Additionally, a transmission tech has confirmed that ATF+4 can be used in place of the Hyundai SP4-M fluid. While the OEM Hyundai SP4-M fluid is quite expensive, the more affordable MOPAR ATF+4 can be used as a compatible alternative.

DO I trust this - not implicitly I would go study the links If I had time though

Find out if the multi-make fluids like Valvoline and Castrol are approved for both cars. If so, I wouldn't worry about it.

Yes, really. If that happened to me, I would own that service garage (send my wife there with "the look").

I would be far more worried about why the transmission needed to be "topped up". Is it leaking?
Agreed. He had the fluid changed just a month or two earlier. Maybe they got the level incorrect?? He (his girlfriend driving it) stated that it started feeling like it was "slipping/acting up". Stopped into a service garage (give her credit).......................... seems to be running fine now.

That's all I know. This story was shared from another forum by the uncle of an acquaintance of a long lost relative of my step sister's third father. ;)

Thank you Uncle Dave, Char baby, and zrxkawboy. Any other opinions? Just trying to ease his mind - maybe has the BITOG OCD? I would let it go. That's 4 votes o.k., no votes for replace fluid.
