The rear (Motorcraft) shock absorbers on my Grand Marquis were shot, and since I have a suspension upgrade coming up a couple of months down the road, I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a temporary fix. Also, I always replace front and rear shocks together. Might not make much sense, but I'd rather have new shocks from the same manufacture all round so everything's equal.

Initially I wanted to go with Motorcraft's Police Interceptor shocks for the firmer ride, as they are a great bang for the buck. But as with everything, only the front shocks (AS-1064) are imported. The only available Motorcraft rear shock is for applications with rear air springs (AS-2010-G). The rear PI shocks I wanted (AA-527) were no longer available. So I thought I'd pass.

The other option available were ACDelco shocks, but I was advised against them by my suspension guy. Even when we redid the entire suspension on my Avalanche, we did not use ACDelco shocks. The guy modified a set of KYB shocks for a Land Cruiser Pickup instead, and the difference was night and day compared to the 6 month old ACDelcos that were on there. Those shocks are pretty stiff (stiffer than Bilsteins), so if I were to jump on the pick up bed, it won't budge. So I had a word with him about modifying those shocks to fit my Grand Marquis instead of going with the Bilsteins I initially planned to put on.

The last option available were Gabriel shocks. I had a look at their website, and decided I would go with their Ultra series for my application. Considering you get what you pay for, I wasn't really expecting much for $73 (front and rear). But I'm extremely impressed by them, and I reckon it would be safe to say that's probably the best $73 I ever spent. The ride is MUCH firmer, there's noticeably less body lean at turns and it soaks up bumps very impressively.

I realize some might say I had worn rear shocks to begin with, so any new shocks would give the same result. But this isn't my first fullsize Ford, so I know how it compares.

I can only say I agree on the KYBs, pretty darn stiff when we used them on a Tacoma, ride was much, much better and more controlled.

While the KYB's are VERY controlled, I have had one blow out on the rear of my vans.

Be careful of knocking ACDelco, as on my Silverado those mean Bilstein!

Glad to hear the nice feedback on the Ultra. Gabriel has often been a real good shock for not too much $$$$.

I reckon the supplier pretty much depends on the application. Makes me wonder who supplies the ACDelco shocks made for this particular application.

Paid $32 for two front shocks and $41 for both rears. So each front shock was $16 and each rear shock was $20.50.

Wow -- I'd buy a set if I could get that price as well. My OEM shocks on the Aspen are too cushy -- wish-washy. The cheapest I can find is Monroe Reflex for ~ $42/shock. Bilsteins are way higher.

I had a set of Gabriels on my old Ranger originally. On one of them the bushing popped out of place and the shock was bouncing around on its mount. Never bought them again after that...I wrote it off as something to expect on a $16 shock. I have since mostly used Monroe shocks, but noticed a slight leak on one shortly after installing it on my truck. There's a lifetime warranty, so it's not a big deal, but there's still the inconvenience of taking the leaky shock off. I guess that's what I get with a $20 shock.

I'm sure the Gabriels are going to ride much better than the worn out originals, so you definitely will get your money's worth out of them.

Unless I'm mistaken the point of the aspen is a nice cushy highway ride- not cornering prowess, it's a 3 ton SUV lol

There's nothing wrong with wanting a little more control. I had the same issue with our '07 T&C. Float was horrible, especially out of the rear shocks (felt like they were blown, and the van was brand new). I tried Gabriel Ultras, but they felt like solid steel tubes compared to the front struts. I returned those for the next line down, the Gabriel Red Ryders. Better, but still very unbalanced compared with the front. So I left the OE shocks on and just lived with the float.

Expense. I was looking for a quick fix for the float in the back. But even the "softest" shock I found was much firmer than the front struts. I didn't care to put $250 or more into it to replace all four corners, so I just left the OEM stuff on.

This is true. It's a very smooth highway cruiser. However, if one hits an expansion joint around a curve, the rear end starts bouncing around -- making the driver feel somewhat uneasy at 65-70 mph. Owners have solved this issue by replacing the soft OEM shocks. From what I read, Bilsteins are pretty stiff. I think the cheaper Reflexes would be fine for me. (don't mean to highjack thread).

The main issue with Gabriels is longevity. Since it is a temporary fix on your vehicle, it looks to be a great choice.
then again, I'm a big KYB fan and admittedly a little biased.

I had a very abused set of Gabriels on the back of my Van. They saw thousands of miles of high speed washboard over many years.

When I replaced them, they were still dampening somewhat, but the KYB Gas A Justs made the van handle so much better I was amazed.

But the KYB GAJ's are not soft by any means.

I put what are the equaivalent of the Gabriel Ultras on my Ranger and huge improvement in handling, but also reducing dive under braking. ~$190/set and worth it. they also last a long, long time.

I learned you spend $70/set on yellow Monroes every 12 months or do it right and spend $200 once every few years.

If you're talking about the Monroe Reflex, I had a set on the front of my old Dakota and they were excellent. If I replaced the back shocks, I would have went with those as well. I'd put 'em on my current vehicles if they made the Reflex for them (they don't).

Just bought 4 Ultras for one of my service vans. GMC Savana 3500 weighing in at 9000+ pounds every day of its poor life!

Amazon had them for 150 bucks shipped and I get a rebate for one, so net cost is just a bit over 100 bucks.

KYB blew out on this van. Lets see what an Ultra can do.

I`m very interested in those results Steve. Because my factory struts are KYB`s.

yep. So am I.

I have at least 2 trucks that need shocks. One is my personal Silverado.

I'd love it if they would be tight on the big vans but still give a nice ride in 'Silver'.
