Hey guys I just had a few questions, about the coolant in my 4.0L OHV V6 Explorer. I know that it is the traditional green coolant. What are the advantages/disadvantages of replacing it with G-05? Should I stick with the good old regular green? BTW, how bad is running a very strong concentration of coolant in the radiator? The front end was wrecked a while ago, so it has a new radiator, with pretty new coolant but I think the shop that mixed it mixed it really strong. like 70/30 hopefully not more than that. I tested it with one of those $4 prestone coolant testers, and it went of the scale 50/50 is -34F, it was at like -50 or -60 degress F.

I would stick with the 50/50 mix as it flows better and give better heat transfer charactoristics than a stronger mix.

I have just switched my '96 3.8L windstar to G-05. So it is too soon to comment....although I had grabbed the Prestone "Yellow jug" last year...and used it.....and later found out that it is a dexcool clone.
I changed my coolant along with the lower intake manifold gasket replacement process.

I would recommend Zerex G-05 (says G-05 on the front label) or the Motorcraft Premium Gold.

Now that I have said that......FORD still recommends the "traditional green" for our older vehicles. This is why I chose the G-05, as it still has SOME silicate, where-as the Dexcool and its MANY clones have NO silicate.
So, yes, we would be straying from the FORD recommendations.

You can still buy the "traditional green" under the Motorcraft brand, Peak "Original" brand, and Zerex "Original" brand.

As a rule of thumb, if it says "long life" or something like 5 years x miles, or "mixes with all" it will NOT be traditional green.

i use g-05 in all my 98 fords and accoding to the tech. g-05 is much better then green etc. and it is back ward compatible and will mis with the rest..i been using it for 2 years now..i use a 60/40 mix all year long.....

If the coolant in there is still fairly fresh I would drain a little out and top off with distilled water until you get to 50/50. FWIW
