So, I spy this on e-bay.

New 1NZ-FE w/ 200 miles about 4 hours from my house; a bit pricey, but maybe if I can get for $800 or so?

Nothing really wrong with the engine I have, getting a bit tired; I've never done a FWD engine swap, just one RWD. I'm wondering if I pull the whole kit'n'kaboodle out of the car, or do I try to just remove the engine and leave the transaxle (manual) in there? I probably should do a clutch job (never done that either) Just need some pointers/strategy, this is highly preliminary and maybe need someone to say "not worth it" or "in over your head" but I could see getting 10 more years out of this car with a new engine. Any issues with an engine sitting 7 years in a heated garage? Gummed up, stuck rings?

Just need some ideas bounced off me right now; thanks.

Interesting. I would first survey how the factory stuck these in; many are on subframes that get lifted up from below.

What's the power to weight on an echo? I could conceivably see 1.5 liters get plumb worn out despite decent design and maintenance.

And of course there's the question, do you really like the echo? Could you live with it for 20 years?

You could put a wrench on the crank bolt before you bid.

Here's a link to my thread where I swapped engines in my wife's FWD car. It skips ahead a little but you're not missing too much- it's really pretty straight forward.
