I'm asking this for my brother, he doesn't use a computer. The car is a 1993 Honda Civic, with the D15B7 engine. It currently has 388000 kms, and runs fine. My brother wants to put Mobil 1 full synthetic in it, he's not sure what grade. I suggested maybe he might try the GC 0w30, but my brother commented that "Oh that's just too thin". So then, what synthetic oil would you recommend for this high-mileage car?

With that many miles I'd stay with regular oil and 5k mile drains. Their are quite a few really good conventional oil brands out their now. If your going to switch over to a synthetic, you might want to run Auto-Rx first to clean out the engine otherwise you run the risk of the synthetic oil exposing leaks and breaks in the engine seals.

388000kms?!?!?!

Gotta love those Honda engines!!

I would not change over at that many miles. However GC 0w30 is one of the thickest 30 weights on the market (11.5 cSt) . Mobil 1 is one of the thinnest (9.7cSt).

If it does not use oil I would use Castrol GTX as that is a excellent Dino that seems to be readily available in Canada.

If it's running well at that "kilometerage", seems like you'd be fine continuing with a good dino. Pennzoil, Motorcraft, Chevron Supreme 5w30. Maybe add the Lube Control dosage to do a little cleaning.

It really depends on what condition the motor is in. I just changed over from conventional to full synthetic with my 175k (miles...) 94 honda accord. i was thinking, hey if it starts leaking i will just go back to dino. My car feels exactly the same, and i think Im getting about 1-2 mpg better. Ive ran the synthetic for about 8k (on my second change.)

It is a gamble tho!

Amsoil AME 15W40 full synthetic - it is a good deal at just over $8 CDN and is great for high-miler gas engines.......I would only recommend this if he is not burning or leaking.

Esso XD-3 0w30 or 0W-40 should be just fine if he wants a 'full synthetic' for that engine. The 0w30 is fairly 'thick', in fact, has higher viscosity than even many 10W30 oils and has a very low pour point (good for Canadian ops).

The stuff is cheap at $4/L when bought a case at a time (4 x 4L jugs) at your local Esso bulk distributor, and is a group IV synthetic.

If he makes the comment, 'thats too thin', show him the XD-3 spec sheet,

The 0w30 is clearly a 'thicker' oil at 40C and 100C than their 5W30 SAE grades, and actually behaves more like a 10W30 oil, maintaining the cold pumpability specs that are crucial to Canadian operation. Important, especially if he wants to get more life out of components such as the starter and the valvetrain and oilpump.
