I own a 2017 rav4. Fwd. 88k on clock. Been using full synthetic every 5k. When, if ever, should I switch to high milage? Thanks! Edward

I use 'high mileage' in my own car (1990 with 220K miles), the oil comes in a mix of part dino, part synthetic - I use that one. But there's also full synthetic 'high mileage' oil. If it weren't for economics I'd run the full synth stuff all the time instead of what I use.

All that said, my car has a few minor oil leaks. which is why I use the high mileage stuff. But if it didn't have any oil leaks and economics didn't factor in, I'd just use high quality synthetic oil, wouldn't even bother the high mileage stuff.

It has a bit of extra seal conditioners which I'd argue can keep the seals from getting old sooner by being used proactively instead of reactively once leaks start and at worst won't ever hurt. It's very mild and not like a whole bottle at plasticizer such as at205 getting dumped in and causing the seals to over swell and fail.

I wouldn't do it today, but I would tomorrow!

Just kidding. HM oils these days really aren't priced any higher than the non HM oils. Won't hurt. I would stick with the synthetic HM in your car though. The blends won't hurt, but you will get maximum protection with the synthetic and price difference is almost negligible.

You can switch any time you'd like. If it has the HM same specifications as the non-HM synthetic, it is perfectly fine to use. The moniker "High Mileage" just denotes more seal conditioners and possibly antiwear additives. But again, if both have the same specs, those conditioners and additives fall within the acceptable range for that spec.

High Mileage eye candy in Dexos 1.
