Is there such a fluid? Would like to find some to do a pan drop and filter change on my crown Vic. Are synthetic atf fluids better for older transmissions. I have service records on this car and the transmission fluid has been changed twice at 60k and 120k. Any advice would help. Also no problems with transmission just want to maintain vehicle as best I can

+1 on the maxlife. Good price to performance transmission fluid. I switched from Mobil 1 ATF on my Sienna and went to Maxlife. Performance was exactly the same for half the price.

I don't like MaxLife for Ford products, as I just don't trust stuff that says "suitable for". I prefer using an approved fluid, although it doesn't have to be OEM. Valvoline also weaseled out of the conventional Mercon V offering by calling it "ATF for Mercon V Applications" rather than getting Ford approval.

In addition, MaxLife claims to be "suitable for" both Mercon V and Mercon LV, which are fluids with different properties.

The 4R70W in my ex's Marauder has almost 200,000 miles on it using a variety of Castrol, Motorcraft, and Supertech approved Mercon V fluids and it's still like new.

I'm not saying Maxlife is a bad product or that it doesn't have its uses, I just don't think it's needed in the OP's case.

Mobil 1 synthetic ATF is currently on clearance at Auto Zone for $2/quart. That's plenty cheap. I still prefer to use just plain old Valvoline conventional ATF. Changing a quality ATF every 30K-50K in an automatic trans is the key...not so much what brand you use.

I vaguely remember looking for this back when I had my F150. The red bottle Motorcraft stuff won't suit your needs, but I think Castrol makes a Mercon V that is more robust.

Like the other posters said, I'd get something specifically labeled MV and not a one size fits all.

You could also add some Lubegard Red when you're done for extra protection.

^^^ This ^^^

I've talked to a lot of Crown Vic guys who all told me the same thing: CVs aren't fussy about what oil you use, but their transmissions are fussy about what ATF you use. Use only Mercon V, not something "suitable for Mercon V applications." Don't add any other products to the transmission fluid.

Do a drain-and-fill (not a fluid exchange) every 30K. If your transmission pan doesn't have a drain plug you can get one by Dorman that does.

Do this, and your car will fall apart around the transmission and engine before those fail.

My opinion is that you would be well served by any licensed Mercon V fluid- and even better with the addition of an auxiliary trans cooler.

Mercon V is basically a synthetic blend of Mercon III. You should be fine with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF, got a bunch of it for $2 at Autozone. Otherwise you should just stick to Mercon V. It's funny how Valvoline has a Mercon V fluid, but it doesn't have the Mercon V spec on the back of the bottle, just says suitable for Mercon V applications. They didn't want to pay the license fee to say it's Mercon V. On the other hand, Supertech Mercon V at Walmart is $4.27 a quart and does actually say it meets Mercon V specs.

I have not found a synthetic fluid that carries fords approval. Everything I've found says "suitable for use in...".

Mobil 1 used to, but does not currently AFAIK. Amsoil never has and likely never will. Assuming both just don't wish to pay for the license.

I'm not excited about a fluid that says it can meet LV and V in one fluid.

Thanks for all the replays. I will have to look in to that pan you mentioned. Going to try to get to 300k with this car and want to take care of her to get there

Dorman 265-813 Transmission Pan with Drain Plug on Amazon goes for half of U-Haul pan right now. Changing ATF filter every 50k here, even though Ford says 100k is good enough.

$27 shipped here Was lower than that when I checked a few hours ago. Rock will add enough for shipping, may ship a few days after the promised date and it came with rust, when I tried them last time. I prefer U-Haul pans, but it takes time to get one for a reasonable price.
Part number F8UZ-7A194-AA is better than Dorman, but more expensive, of course. And there better yet custom pans, if you are willing to spend more, but I'd rather look into external cooling options.
