Okay,

I have been unsing Mobil 1 10w30 (changed @ 3k) for 8yrs in this motor. '98 Jeep 5.9 magnum V8. Then the last year or so I switched to Mobil 1 High Mileage due to high-miles, and a few minor leaks (no drips, just seepage).

The vehicle burns about a QT of Mobil 1 every 3k and always has. I suspect the problem is due to the Mobil 1 and that if I switch to a different oil it could curb the problem. I have read about others with the same issue.

Anyway, I was gonna switch to Castrol GTX High Mileage formula, but I have just become aware that Valvoline makes Max-Life in full-syn formula. I was going to try the Castrol High Mileage dino because so far, the ONLY High Mileage Full-syn oil I had found was Mobil 1...

But I am not a Valvoline guy, so should I try the Max-life, full syn, or will the Castrol dino High Mileage be okay?

Oh and this vehicle is not a DD anymore and will only be driven a couple thousand miles per year tops. I plan to change the oil every 3k or 1yr, which ever comes first.

Will a dino/semi-syn oil be fine, or should I keep full-syn High Mileage oil since I now have another option besides Mobil 1?

I may be mistaken on this, but I seem to remember a lot of those Jeeps burning through oil. I'm not sure if the brand would make much of a difference.

Do your spark plugs and tailpipe indicate you are burning oil or is it going somewhere else? Where are the seeps? Are they around gaskets or engine seals? 1 quart every 3K seems excessive to me as I have been blessed in that I have never had an engine that consumes or leaks oil.

If you see any signs of oil burning, I would not hesitate to try a 10W-40 High Mileage oil.

The Valvoline MaxLife HM is GREAT oil. use with complete confidence.

You can save a bit of money and try the MaxLife Syn-Blend and possibly get the same results.

No plugs tailpipe fine...seppage is around valve covers, rear main maybe...nothing excessive enough to leave any puddles....the point is, it has done this since I got it in 2001. I am not sure exactly how much it uses, but my other Jeep uses none between changes...I use Trop-artic in it, but the one with M-1 uses oil. One Jeeps, it can be caused by bad intake/plenum gaskets, but mine have been replaced once before.

Just out of curiosity, why did you run M-1 for only 3K changes?

1.) Because I am a sicko about maintenance and had been used to changing dion every 3k in previous cars

2.) Because it used some oil between changes from the git-go and I was frustrated and did not want to have to top it off between changes

I probably should have just ran dino when I got it at 65k...it has 178k on it now and has had M-1 since then

Other options are Mobil Clean High Mileage, Pennzoil High Mileage, and even Supertech High Mileage. That market has proved successful enough that everyone is in on it. I'd go for the cheapest.

The Valvoline Maxlife Full Synthetic is most likely an awesome product. I know it's thought of very highly around here. The synthetic blend seems very overpriced to me. (Though the 5 quart jugs at Wal-Mart are quite cheap!)

I've also been told that the synthetic blend Supertech 10w30 contains an ester seal swelling agent, but isn't marketed as high mileage.

well on this vehicle, I want a non-energy conserving High Mileage 10w30 oil...so far, based on reading other threads, Castrol High Mileage dino changed every 6 months (since the truck will not see many miles), might be the best option. I am not a Valvoline man...and IF I tried the max-life, I would most likely just do the blend for price...unless you can convince me that since the engine has had M-1 for the last 110k and I should STICK to a synthetic oil...again, it is not used much, I need to know the best oil to sit in a crankcase and be driven about once a month unless I need to go camping or to the lake.

If the vehicle uses only 1 quart every 3K miles, you will not see any indication of it on the spark plugs or the tailpipe.
Remember that a lot of manufacturers will say 1 quart every 1K miles in okay.
