I just finished removing an oil filter from my 2004 Sienna. I was surprised to see Google unable to find anything on the following:

This took >2hrs to remove and at times wanted to strangle the chap who tightened.

Even a filter cap wrench only barely moved, and slipped as well.

Unfortunately the filter was empty, and the media was hard and brittle. I don't want to know how long it was on the vehicle.

I am putting a Bosch filter back on, but here's how it appear right after removal. Oy.

Put it back on, clean up the area. Remove filter, clean again.

Why was filter empty?

Definately looks like a Chinese knock of.

If the filter was dry does that mean it was in full bypass?

I have heard people talk about it but I assume this is why the engine didn't sieze?

The one hole looks suspiciously like a bullet hole! ( : < ) Nobody would blame you ....

Another example of a cheap filter improperly installed. Yeah, Faced with that evidence, a normal person would really just rather know the history of that filter and focus rather on the legendary durability of Toyota engines.

But overall, thanks for bringing back the PTSD from all the similar experiences I had when I wrenched for a living

I did a Google and a company called Fujitoyo sells adult toys on Alibaba!

Based in Taiwan.

But eBay in the UK is flooded with these cheap tat filters and are made in china.

Apparently they have ISO 9001 & QS 9000 approval. I doubt it though.

Since I thought ISO 9001 was a UK standard for how well you manage the running of your business and has nothing to do with the products you sell, you employ a consultant for a few thousand pounds and there you go. ISO 9001 certification on your headed notepaper and website.

QS 9000 is pretty much the same.

So they have taken two standards that don't relate in anyway to the quality of an automotive product and attached them.

Pure PR spin to catch the terminally thick.

Seems to work very well on eBay in the UK! No surprise there. What did somebody on here say?

Penny wise but pound foolish.

Have seen them on eBay for Saabs and they are almost the exact same price as a proper German made Hengst/Bosch or similar from EuroCarParts.

OP's situation has showed they are lucky to get this off before anything bad happened Nd that some Toyotas really are unkillable.

Not always the case nowadays, mores the pity.

After wrenching for 25yrs, I haven't ever encountered a filter bound that tightly. And in that time, only one filter even had to have a screwdriver poked through. So I was unprepared for the ensuing drama.

I was assuming that the Anti-drainback valve was not holding any oil?

I've owned the van since summer 2012.

Yep

What kind of quick lube did this car come from?

Anyway, that filter reminds me of "V7" filters that I once had to use at a quick lube.

It's the first oil change I've done since owning the van ... I didn't think anyone would use such a piece of [censored] on their vehicle and would have changed in an instant had I known.
