Is there any information on the board about which fuel system/combustion chamber cleaners are the best and most effective......I have been using Chemtool B-12...generally think Chemtool is tops...

Chemtool B-12 worked great in my Saturn SL2. The car immediately started to run better. I would guess based on that experience that there may not be enough cleaner in some gasolines. I also discovered that BG44K fuel system cleaner and injector cleaner can be found in Honda and Toyota dealerships, at least in my area. This stuff is more expensive than what you may find in a Wal-Mart Store, but it sure seems to work! Based on my experience I would say that it is a good idea to occasionally use either a fuel system cleaner or an injector cleaner every once in a while-say maybe every three months or so. I think I will stick with what seems to work-either the Chemtool B12 (which is cheaper) or the BG44K. I don't know which is better.

I like Fuel Power and Nuetra. I am not a fuel test person but the chemists I consult with are and they like both of those too.

I have used the Amsoil PI religiously in several cars for years. Never had a problem (but also don't know if I would have if not used) . Also began using the Neutra and in the cars using the PI noticed no diff but then Amsoil PI was used and engine probably fine. However, in my small lawn equip engines, WOW, Neutra makes a huge very quickly noticeable difference.

So, I think the Neutra works very well and the PI probably does as well.

As a complete fuel system cleaner, the Fuel Power or PI is pretty good. Fuel power will also give you an increase in mileage for most vehicles. If I suspect I have combustion cleaning problems such as spark knock, I willl use Neutra.

In fact, I use a formulated fuel additive as follows (per gallon) for my daily drivers:

1. 2.5 quarts Fuel Power, 1 quart Neutra, and one 4 oz. can of Outlaw. This gives you the following advantages:
a.) Cleaning of Fuel System,
b.) Cleaning of Combustion Chamber deposits,
c.) A slight increase in octane rating for marginal fuels,
d.) lubricates and plates valve seats to reduce valve recession.

The treatment rate is 1 oz. per 10 gallons.

Thanks MolaKule......what is PI ?? Also, I thought that valve recession has been a thing of the past since they introduced hardened valve seat inserts with unleaded fule in 1974. Are you still driving an old, pre-cat area car without hardened valve seat inserts??

Not anymore. I just sold the '86 Burb 350 V8, although it had hardened seats after a head rebuild.

If you don't need valve seat recession protection, then you still need a slight metallic lubricant film to reduce mechanical shock that occurs when using high lift, high overlap cam timing is used. Think of it as an "added" feature.

Hmm...you mix Fuel Power & Neutra? My fuel is OK, I could probably skip the Outlaw octane booster. Neutra & FP- hmm...something new to try!

And what dothe forum memers think of it as a fuel system cleaner? Does it have combustion chamber/valve cleaning properties too?

Techron is produced by cheveron, available at local parts stores

About 4yrs ago I was told about BG-44K by my mechanic. I've since discovered that many of the indy Saab mechanics in my area (north of Denver) recommend this as part of the 20k mile maintenance interval, so this is what I've been doing. It's powerful stuff, so I don't think I'd use more than once a year or every 10k miles.

I talked to another Saab owner who was told by his dealer that he needed a new #3 fuel injector. He tried a can of BG-44K & reported that by the time he'd run 1/2 a tank, he'd improved enough to know it was really all his engine needed.

I usually pick it up at Napa parts stores around here, for about $20 a can.

[Edit:] I should add that I used to run a traditional fuel cleaner (like STP or Gumout) every 3rd or 4th tank of gas & never had any problems with that regimen. BG-44K is simply a cheaper & easier way for me to ensure a clean fuel combustion system. You can read more about it here.

I used Techron over the years in one car (the one I did not consistently put the PI in) and it seemed to work fine. Expensive though and somewhere I recently read that it was not that great a product.

After using Neutra though, I would not use Techron again. Neutra is less expensive and works

I use Redline SI-1 Fuel System Cleaner about every 12K. It's $5 at PepBoys. When I worked at BMW a few years back, this is was the only BMW approved tank-added fuel system cleaner we could use.
