Do fuel system cleaners weaken oil viscosity? Should I use them prior (500 miles) to an oil change? Thanks

I usually wait till before an OCI as well. Although Red Line told me their cleaner has no bad effects on the oil, and is safe to use anytime you like. Still I tend to wait until an OCI if I plan on using one.

No, its not bad. Seems people simply think that the Old oil is on its way out anyways, so why not run Fuel Cleaner in the Tank prior to disposing of the old, used-up Oil. Id agree.

Anyways, the Fuel system shouldnt affect the Oil, really.

We've seen UOA's where fuel system cleaners have caused certain metals, such as copper, to spike. It might be getting into the oil and leaching metal out of the bearings.

I would do it closer to the oil change if you're worried. Then you're assured to get out whatever might be in the oil with the change.

IMO, just use the stuff whenever. That's IMO, FWIW.

Why would a cleaner get into the oil if gas doesn't? Also wouldn't a cleaner in oil evaporate away like gas does?

This is nonsense.

Unless I saw a clinical test that was certified by API or something I would seriously doubt this is the case..

At least with the major brand products like Regane, Techron, and Redline...

Essentially all those bottle products contain is a kerosene carrier and PEA....PEA will not "etch" metal. And is no more harmful to metal than the detergents contained in motor oil.

My car has 95K on it and I'm unsure if the previous owner did any sort of cleaning to the fuel system. Would I cause any harm to run a cleaner I can find at Wal-Mart? What are the popular choices here at BITOG?
