Fuel Filters

I could not find any areas for fuel filters so I decided this one because it is fluid related and not air.

Just how often do we need to change our fuel filters today? Are there differences in brands? I looked at some aftermarket ones in Canadian Tire and they are from China. Are they to be trusted?

What are the other choices? I wouldn't trust anything made in China. They can't even make a decent hammer!! (ask me how)

For most fuel injected cars, the service interval is every 30,000 miles. I've heard that neglecting fuel filter service can result in dirty injectors. Filtration demands are a lot more critical than in the days of carburation.

BTW, the last fuel filter I bought was made in Israel... first time I saw anything imported from that country!

Fuel filters are like any other filter, as they fill up with debris they actually filter better (the debris adds to the filter media) but the flow rate decreases. Dirty injectors would happen either from fuel residue buildup or a ruptured filter that allowed debris to go through a physical rip or tear in the filter media (usually a mfg defect, not caused by normal service). The symptoms of a fuel filter that has been in service too long is normally fuel starvation at higher rpms...enough fuel can pass for low rpm operation but not enough for high rpm. Blocked fuel filters (and any other blocked filters) also cause high back pressure on the pump and pre-filter flow lines so leaks may develop and pumps can wear out pre-maturely.
If a filter gets blocked with debris earlier than the normal interval it is a good bet that the fuel tank itself has an abnormal amount of dirt/clay/debris and just changing the filter will just mean a new filter will clog pre-maturely too (and the fuel pump pre screen)...Sometimes it just takes one fillup from a pump of dirty fuel to make you need to remove and clean out a fuel tank---sounds like personal experience huh?

I've seen some of the "made in Israel" filters and saw nothing wrong with them. They were Fram filters from Walmart, probably as good as most others, maybe better. However,,,,these days I am trying to buy AMERICAN as often as I can. Napa fuel filters are good too, I buy them these days.
