Fuel filter in Bypass, pictures inside

This unit was on a 1990 F150 for 17,000 miles. Pulled it off to replace and the filter is rattling around.

Placed back inside to see how it was doing nothing but possibly blocking the flow. Sad.

Duralast branded filter. You're saying it was lose inside the can enough to not even be filtering at all?

Yes. Construction is such that it was to be glued to the outlet side of the assembly, gasoline pass through the filter and be pushed into the outlet tube to the engine. The metal end of the filter is solid, so the fluid is forced, if attached, through the paper. The filter was just bouncing around I suppose depending on pressure. If the element pushed to the inlet side, it could almost stop the flow.

I suppose if fuel was flowing it would push the loose filter out of the way so probably not stuck or blocking but definitely not what we want in a filter to be flopping around inside. I agree with junk.

I've been seeing an infusion of those OBS F150's in my area, more than before, which is surprising since I live in the rust belt they're usually pretty thinned out by today's age. What filter did you end up putting back onto the fuel line?

Purolator. It is also a sealed metal unit, electric pumps in the 2 tanks, so we will not know the quality of its construction.
Hard to know what parts to depend on. 30k recommended intervals but I suggested to go with 15k. Glad this one is out.

Wonder how long this thing has been this way.
