Hello,

If I run my car for quite sometime using a mineral oil where sludges and varnishes have already accumulated in my engine, what would you recommend will be the replacement of the cartridge of the by-pass filter if this will be the 1st time I will be using this in my car.
How about the 2nd replacement what will be the duration of frequency in running hours etc. By common sense I think the cartridge will be clogged that easily during the 1st time you will install it to remove as many contaminants present in the engine am I right on this ?

How can we kno

2nd I've been checking on some by-pass filters such as oilguard,fs2500, puradyne, filtakleen etc.

I believe the Frantz TP filter recommends 500 miles for the first change, but that is not based on switching to synthetic at the same time. My understanding of synthetics and HDEO's is that they are much better at deposit control than conventional oil and will very gradually provide a detergent action in engines with existing deposits / sludge. I do not think there will be a 'mass exodus" of contaminants. My bypass filters are on vehicles that have had synthetic all, or most of their service life so I have no direct experience in the above opinion.

The different bypass filter elements have replacement intervals from 2k to more than 20k. As far as hours are concerned 1 hour = 35 miles, so I change the TP filter in (2) Frantz and (2)Motor Guard units every 50 hours or 2000 miles. All the various filter types have their advantages and disadvantages. I personally am sold on both the Frantz and Motor Guard TP filters.

As a rule of thumb the TP filters don't clog up in an engine with normal maintenance before the filter was installed. I did a valve job on a Toyota pickup with over 100,000 mi using Pennzoil non synthetic. The engine was immaculate. It didn't need a valve job all it needed was a new head gasket. It didn't have a bypass filter but it had the recommended oil changes. I transferred a Frantz oil cleaner to it from a Honda Civic. The Frantz was changed every 4000 miles on the Toyota until it was traded for a GEO Prism at 200,000 miles. I put the Frantz on the ATF and a Motor Guard M-30 on the engine oil of the Prism. The Honda Civic needed engine work at over 350,000, I didn't feel the car was worth the cost of the repairs. The Frantz was bought from an Amsoil dealer in Salt Lake City in 1980. Amsoil 10-40 was put in the manual transmission and the engine. The salt had damaged the body. The car was offered to me as a gift. On hindsight I should have gotten it just to see what the engine looked like.
My engines have always been immaculate because I have never allowed the oil to get dirty. My personal choice is the Motor Guard but any time you pump oil thru a roll of TP you are going to get clean oil. As a rule of thumb you need to change the TP every 4000 mi on a 4 every 3000 on a 6 and every 2,000 on a 8. The sales pitches where a filter maker recommends longer change intervals with a filter of the same size is bogus. The better the filter and the smaller the filter the more often it must be changed. I don't like "normal" engine wear. I go for maximum engine life. Maximum engine life means a better running engine even though I may not keep the car as long as it lasts.
