I personally kind of have a problem with using a French-made product, but forget that for now. I have heard that there is a French-made oil filter for new Saturns using the Ecotec engine. It is called the Purlux 264A. It is supposed to have 138 sq inches of filtering material, which seems like a lot to me. Is this oil filter available for earlier model Saturns, such as a 2001 Saturn with the double overhead cam engine? Has anybody checked out this oil filter?

What? The filter that promises to be engine friendly, but slowly releases toxic metal and cr@p into your engine....yeah I'll take one....NOT.
It's a terrible thing that all those store shelves are full of French wine. If the price drops dramatically, I'll help correct that inventory problem

I did a quick calculation. The square root of 138 is 11.74+ - in other words the medium would have to measure nearly 11 3/4 inches square, or some other length/width combination to arrive at that area. That's gonna be a huge filter, and I'd be very surprised to find the Ecotech engine requires or is fit with anything approaching that size. Even if we assume a misprint that the source indicated square inches instead of square centimeters, it still works out to a square of 4.62 inches or 21.34 sq. inches - itself a hunk of a filter. (For comparison the WIX 3985 has a filtering medium listed at 3.1" x 3.6", yielding an area of 11.16 sq. inches. This would be a very generously oversize direct replacement on late Honda I-4 Accords (more than twice the filtering area of the OEM filters), IF you could just find sufficient physical clearance to get it through the available space to mount it, located as it is, on the firewall side of the block...)

I prefer to look at it this way...its a good thing they (France) stayed out of the war...they just would have surrendered on the first day...then we would be chasing Saddam around both Iraq & France!
Aruuuuuuuuuuuugh, how about not only French made, but in an orange box too? Both the filter that came from the factory in my 02 Cavalier and the one I paid my Chevy dealer $8 for in a box labeled AC Delco, said Purlux 264A on the inside. Later I discovered Fram was selling the same filter, Purlux number, mold numbers, and all. A month ago, I found a cheap Fram thing in the PH 9018 box instead. I tried an STP, but it looks suspiciously like the Fram thing. It is a cartridge filter with no metal housing to hide the filter media and plastic end caps.
And yes Ray, whether it needs it or not, the one I took apart and measured was 3'' wide by 46'' long giving the 138 sq in. Perhaps Mystic is going by some of my previous posts of this info. That 138 in2 is barely half what my 77 LUV gets when I find a PF1177 for it. Along with some others here, I tend to see filter area as one of those "never too much" things.
I have not seen Purlux filters sold under their own name in the limited number of stores I can shop at. I have collected the following numbers as specified for my Cavalier.
ACDelco PF2244G
Hastings LF548
Purflux L264A
Purolator L 15436
Baldwin P1445
STP S9018R
WIX 51365
I am told it does, but I am not sure the Cavalier with the Ecotec takes exactly the same oil filter as the Saturns, but I would think so. The Purlux filter has a distinctive zig zag to the pleats compressing 3'' of media into a 2 1/2'' filter. So look around. I haven't seen most of the brands listed above, and they could be as good as the Purlux.
