I did my own freezer test today on heavier oils in my freezer for 8 hours. The 3 oils were

1. New Chevron Delo 400 15w40 (ended up thickest)
2. Used Chevron Delo 400 sae30 (second thickest)
3. Used Honda 10w-40 motorcycle oil (not bad)

Right now i am checking the temp of my freezer. I should know this in the morning.

I was just courious how the straight weights perform when cold. I was impressed with the used Delo 400 sae 30. It flowed better than the new 15w40 when below 0 f.

I enjoy simple tests like a freezer test. I don't need freezer tests here but if oil pours when it's frozen it must be good.

Another one i like is smelling used black oil to see if it's burned or just dirty. My old Nissan makes one of the best oils smell burned so I don't use it in that car.

JonS - Anyway, how cold is your freezer?

I just looked. It is about -3 f. The 15w40 is not somethig i would use at this temp. It wouldn't even pour out of the bottle easily. I feel the straight 30 is more like a 10w30.
Next i will try M1 10w30 and Amsoil 10w-40 when i drain them in a month or so. I might try them at -20f this winter (outside)

I freezer tested some NAPA straight 40 weight and at approx zero F I did the 90 degree tilt on the baby food bottle and it didn't pour!

Freezer testing is fun. Last time I did it my daughter saw it in there. "Mom, Dad has motor oil in the freezer again."

Spare refridgerator in the basement, so Mom doesn't look in it that often.

Using small vials to place the oil in there is quite a bit of difference in the GF-3 Motorcraft 5w30 vs the GF-4 Motorcraft 5w30 at + 4f .

Sure it's not a proper test but when there is so much difference it's easy to declare some as winners .

I was kinda suprised how thick some true synthetics got at + 4f

oil #1- AMSOIL 5W40
Oil #2- Shell Formula 10W40

After 3 days in freezer both still poured down the glass. AMSOIL was about 50% faster to pour down compare to Dino 10W40. Overall I was impressed by Shell 10W40, it is an OK oil for cold temp.
