I can't say enough goods things about this site. Keep in mind the wife and I have been filing separate since we paid the house off so I only have a couple 1099's I have to claim.

In the past when I used the same place the following year they always wanted to charge you to enter information from the previous year if they even offered it but not this site, they enter last years info for free. Took me about 45 minutes which included a 10 minute break to make a cup of coffee.

Of course I can't speak for you guys that have complicate returns but for me is was super easy.

Rarely. One instance is if one person has debt and that the other spouse is not responsible for.

I have to apologize, we'er not married. It's just easier to say "my wife" than "my significant other". Long story short we divorced but when we got back together we never remarried. Been with her for almost 30 years minus the year and half we were apart.

When we had a house payment plus her medical bills it was better to file together. I really don't know her dad was an attorney and always took care of our taxes and when he passed one his friends took over and said since we're not married and no house payment it would be better to file separately.

I agree with you and i also like the free tax USA website but why not just get married..? married filing jointly would most certainly be better for taxes

Switched to this from Tax Act last year when their prices kept going up. Gave Credit karma a couple of tries in 16 and 17, but it wouldn't handle my semi-complex return (a couple of rental houses and a percentage of a couple race horses).

FreeTaxUSA nailed it and was well worth the twelve bucks for the state return. Straight forward, no looping dialogues like Tax Act fell into as it attempted to slug it out with the Big Two. If you have an idea of what you're doing, FreeTaxUSA is my favorite so far.

I used TaxAct for several years, but this year they kep't bumping us up from the free version to the $69 version.

My son suggested TaxHawk with Federal free/state $12.95. I see that FreeTax USA is owned by TaxHawk - their start-up pages look similar.

TaxHawk has a discount code TAXHAWK25 for 25% off (woohoo). I bet FreeTax USA does also - maybe try FREETAXUSA25.

Nothing wrong with living together like you are, but you should be aware of some Social Security implications when you get to SS age. If you're not married, or haven't been married at least 10 years, she can not file on your benefits if you die first. Also if you made considerable more money than she did when working, she can file for higher Spousal benefits but only if you're married.

I got duped by Credit Karma once again.. Breezed through the federal only to find out they're not doing NY state at this time. Grrrrr.. There's no way of knowing until the end of doing your Federal either. Went back to TaxAct, but haven't completed it yet. It's almost $80 all in now! When I first used Taxact like 10yrs ago I think it was $19 all in, Fed, State, E-file, etc!

I switched to TaxAct a few years ago because TurboTax was too much, now TaxAct is $70 for federal and state!

I found the FreeTaxUSA site a few days ago and did them for $12.95. I agree with the OP, the site is a breeze to use and I'd highly recommend it.

this year.. got all the way done with free h&r block to find out they wanted 40$ for me to input my w-2g

which is terrible.

I then used freetaxusa worked just as easy as the majors and not so rippy-you-off.

I then filed state for free at ohio's tax website.. but their $13 is reasonable.

This following site shows a 25% off code, but I have not verified it: https://www.couponchief.com/freetaxusa

And as stated above, * TaxHawk owns FreeTaxUSA, so use either service as the same: https://www.taxhawk.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIs5Pem_Wd4AIVQrbACh2w1wOkEAAYASAAEgJO2PD_BwE with a 25% off here: https://www.offers.com/tax-hawk/

* At the page bottom: " 2002-2019 FreeTaxUSA, a TaxHawk, Inc. owned and operated website "
