I have a Fram XtendedGuard from about three years ago. I know it is good for 10,000 miles, but is it OK for 15,000 with a decent grade of synthetic oil? Or good for two oil changes with semi-synthetic or dino? It has been sitting in my refrigerator all this time with my other filters.

This was the Fram Ultra's predecessor.

What does the refrigerator do for your filters?

When I change the Ultra in my Civic, it will have been run for three OCI's or >20k miles. I plan to post the results. Until then, and unless others have done the same and checked its condition afterward, then all you'll get is pure speculation.

I wouldn't put filters in the refrigerator because lots of fresh veggies etc have moisture which could make the humidity be high due to that. Maybe store in the freezer size, but not sure if long term cold storage is really that good for filters. Best way to do it is to vacuum seal the filter if you want to ensure they stay dry.

I think it's overboard to think that oil filters need special storage. Look at all the mechanic shops. Local and dealers. The filters are there in plain sight and yes, they're installed frequently, but I'm sure they have gone through many climate changes and they work fine. Having said that, Xtended/Ultra filters are the bomb.

I have seen new Motorcraft FL-820-S filters with rust on the outlet side of the filter element on the end cap. They were less than 60 days old at the time of purchase. Moisture control is important on these at least.

Keep them next to the night crawlers.

The OP didn't say the refrigerator was plugged in and used for food storage.

A busted fridge in the right garage might make dandy shelving/storage for your precious OCOD's.

Kind of hermetically sealed to keep those 8 pleats and two pieces of cardboard glued on each end ready for action.

He didn't say whether the filters were new or used either!

This is a frost free refrigerator. I keep the filters in a drawer compartment with an open glass of water. The humidity is perfect. There has never been rust, and the O-Rings have never cracked. These filters will last here for at least five times what they would do outside in the shed. This area is dry and sees extreme temperature changes; and rubber cracks with time.

Surgical tubing, for instance, will go bad in about four years unless it is in a cool, sheltered place.
