Fram Ultra XG2870a virgin c&p

i still have two of these filters, i got them super cheap. wish i could use them on transmission filter but the bypass is too high.
I'd say most automotive spin-ons aren't compatible as a transmission filter, even a 8 PSI bypass would still be a lot for a transmission to handle. I looked at Donaldson and Baldwin examples and seeing bypass differential ranges within the 3 to 5 PSI range. Using an PH8A sized filter is leveraging its sheer capacity and media surface area as a safe buffer make sense, This filter would work the same too although maybe practice a shorter filter change interval to make some initial observations of loading before extending further.

Another to add is that a filter this size has sufficient capacity compared to a cellulose paper media found in most basic transmission spin-on filters. So I agree with the other poster, Blake, about this.

why spin on a filter with such a high bypass when i can get filters with much lower bypasses? i think i paid $5 a pop for these filters anyways.

I just spun one of these on brothers neighbors old log splitter this morning. Brother nabbed 3 of em’ at local Wal Mart. All wire backed too. We shall go 5 years maybe more.

Got a couple of these this morning on clearance too. Unfortunately one had drop damage on the dome, for 5 dollars and the sake of science to measure the bypass opening pressure I couldn't complain haha. A little excess glue on the media but surprisingly rust free and still had anti-rust coating that wasn't dried. Enjoy the photos!

Measured an opening force of 6 pounds! the highest so far recorded in the chart, which estimates around 30 PSI.

^^^ Check out the end cap spring seal … ^^^
BC: what does that 2870 fit ?

IIRC some older audi/VW’s.

Yes used many Fram and equivalent on an '86 Audi Coupe GT 2.2L
