Yeah, with the last pic I was pushing down on the leaf spring trying to seal it against the cap and still couldn’t get it flat enough to seal.
Granted this was destined for my lawn mower so not super important but after this, Fram is more or less dead to me for any purpose.
Eager to switch everything over to the Carquest Premium filters.

Post a picture of the element without the leaf spring in place. The end caps not centered on the center tube, allowing the spring to rest on the center tube is a flaw seen in the fiber end cap models.

This filter is supposed to flow 9-11 gpm. I don't see how it could. I think the bypass is always open any time the engine is running anyway.
The flow rate with hot oil needs to be pretty high to make a filter have enough dP to open the bypass valve. Most filters won't hit bypass pressure when the oil is hot, even at engine redline.
I think many including myself have thought that the fiber end caps would compensate for a rippled/rough bypass piece seal area. At least on this anecdote, it seems not.

Sears was one of the original, maybe the first, mail order companies. Could have been Amazon very easily. The heyday was a very long time. The WellsFargo wagon coming to town with your orders maybe earlier.I can imagine you saying that with a straight face.

It probably is the center tube holding the spring like others said.
If I spun the spring around in the hole and pressed down, I could lessen the light leakage but not fully eliminate it. Perhaps once the endcaps are saturated with oil, they may swell enough to seal better but ehh...
Could be that the impression in the fiber end cap needs to match the orientation of the leaf spring as it was assembled before the filter was cut open. From your description, that's what it sounds like since the photo looks like there was contact and an impression around the whole center tube.
