Hey all-

After reading all day about oil/filters, hate to admit but the filter my pops always told me was best....is the worst.

Moving forward:
Jeep 1999 Grand Cherokee WJ 4.7l V8 140K.
DD with mixed offroad driving and cold weather (-10f)

Needing advice on a mid grade filter and oil, IE not M1/K&N combo
Im looking for a flame free recommendation on:

1:should i use a full synthetic/conventional or synthetic blend, currently using castrol syn blend?

2: is it alright to pair a 6K oci with a quality filter w/o worrying about the engine?

3: Ive been reading that purolator/pennzoil/bosch are all very similar filters is this true?

4: a XL Purolator (#30001) is suggested for my jeep per " www.wjjeeps.com/service/maintenance_wj.htm " should i stick with mopar or the XL purolator?

5: Im looking at staying with castrol, i know nothing about valvoline/pennzoil/quakerstate. Are they all about the same for my needs?

6: Brought the truck with 125k have no idea of the service history but have changed all fluids, is it worth using any type of "snake oil"/additive or, run it as is until it dies?

just a slightly overpriced aftermarket filter, while all else being equal.

I wouldn't mind using Fram if there's no other viable alternatives available out there.

Q.

For 6K OCI I would go full synthetic. 5K for syn blend, unless its mainly highway miles. I prefer OEM filters myself, as opposed to after market brands.

After installing Kendall GT-1 syn blend I am now a Conoco-Phillips fanboy, based on how silky it makes the opposed four boxer engine in my Subaru.

Go for PP and Mopar filter from Walmart. Or a NAPA Gold. No oil additives, except possibly Auto-Rx or Kreen. Have you removed the valve cover to see if there is any sludge?

Sessions, you might want to go to the dodge and jeep forums and look at some of the talk about sludge in the 4.7. Since you live in cold county, I personnally would not extend drain interval to 6k. Good oil and good filters are simple to replace. Since you are at 140k, consider a good high mileage oil, a filter like Purolator Pure One or Bosch or Mobil, and change them after a cold winters use. Sure is easier than changing an engine.

For filters, get whatever is decently constructed and at a reasonable price. For different vehicles, that may very well be an actual Purolator, a Bosch, or a Mopar. You won't go wrong with the Mopar filters, unless, of course, they're overpriced. I use a lot of Wix filters, too, and they're great if you can get them for a fine price. Motorcraft is fine, too, considering you guys in the States get them cheaply - as long as you don't mind using a Motorcraft on a Chrysler product. I used to use AC Delco on my Ford, and all went well.

I'm not going to say all oils are the same, since they're not. Any good, name brand synthetic or conventional will do the trick. If you've been using Castrol and get it at a good price and are happy with it, stick with it. It's a fine oil.

I should have added that...Some 20-25 years ago, CR Mag did a test on filters and FRAM OCD rated #1, IIRC! I haven't seen anything from CR lately.

Again, IIRC CR tested for filtration and I don't remember much about the article. I used FRAM filters myself for some 20+ years w/o issues except for some startup rattle in one engine in particular(but, not all the time). I never knew what that rattle was attributed to until I discovered BITOG.

I didn't know much about filters/filtration except that I needed it and at that time, FRAM's were always on sale for some ~.99cents along with Havoline Formula 3 oil for ~.49cents. This was back in the early to mid 80's and there were lots of rebates going on.

Since discovering Bob's, I have been using PuroPremPlus(Classic) mainly for their availability/price/reputation. Not a bad combo is it?

I'll still use a FRAM OCD if it came with a particular Oil/Filter special at a reasonable price but, I don't go out to buy them as I did 20 years ago.

Fram XGuard is A finely built filter by fram, very nice construction. It's a 10,000 filter. That is the only Fram I would consider to purchase.

The 4.7 is susceptible to sludge, for that reason alone I'd use a Full Synthetic in the 4.7. If it's running well now and you do so (run Full Synthetic) you'll not likely ever have problems.

My buddy's 4.7 was sludged, he didn't realize it (he hadn't had it that long even though he was only the second owner) and it went kaput at 130k...sludge caused oil starvation that eventually did it in.

Motorcraft are made by Purolator.
